Two hundred and seventy years ago the botanical traveler Henry Hoare began to realise his dream of creating what is now thought to be one of the finest classical gardens in the world, rivaled only by some of the Lombardian gardens in northern Italy.
Yet no Italian garden can come near to the perfectly proportioned and magnificent lake that provides the centerpiece to this truly inspirational landscape. Painters, garden designers and of course photographers have been known to gasp at first sight of this breathtaking garden.
There are almost too many examples of tree and exotic plant species to count, making Stourhead one of the National Trusts most prized jewels in its portfolio of classical gardens. At every turn, the photographer is presented with a shimmering reflection of Stourhead’s famous Pantheon along with the Palladian Bridge which offers the perfect foreground to make an image that may be reminiscent of the great painters, Claude Lorrain and Gaspar Dughet whose paintings influenced the design of these ravishing gardens.
The gardens have been used as backdrops in many major movies including the 2005 film, Pride & Prejudice and after just a few minutes of entering Stourhead gardens, its easy to see why. The landscape photographer will relish Stourhead’s breathtaking views with plants and trees in full Autumn colours for this Light & Land autumnal workshop. Stourhead is a stone’s throw from Mere in Southern Wiltshire and just a couple of hours from London this world-class landscape garden is an absolute gem and overflowing with photographic opportunities.
This one-day workshop will be lead by Charlie Waite, who will guide you through the many considerations of composition and of course the techniques of exposure and filtration that provides the photographer with the confidence and ability to ‘get it right’ in camera. Due to this leaders popularity, we expect high demand for places so to avoid disappointment, we urge you not to delay with your booking.
Charlie is widely regarded as the doyen of English landscape photographers. His style combines graphic finesse with an almost spiritual quality of calm and serenity. His distinctive treatment of historic Mediterranean landscapes in particular is instantly recognisable. Charlie is also...
A truly brilliant and inspirational day - both in terms of Charlie's easy style, expert knowledge and advice and the superb weather!
I didn't have a chance to properly thank you for a wonderful day in Stourhead Gardens today. I regretted having to leave early and nearly missed my taxi because I couldn't stop taking pictures along the way out. Thank you for teaching me about the multiple exposure feature on my camera. I am really going to enjoy experimenting with that. Your photography is very inspiring but more importantly I enjoyed meeting the man behind the moments. I sincerely appreciate you sharing your gifts with the rest of us, and for finding time in your busy schedule to continue to teach.
Peter was super-attentive to all of us. He was brilliant.
An easy form to fill in. The workshop was excellent and the location for autumn landscape photography could not be bettered. Charlie's enthusiasm for composition and technical support was most enjoyable. He was also able to provide the information I needed for my first attempts with filters that worked out well. A truly great day.
Absolutely brilliant! Great day, with excellent tuition. Really appreciated opportunity to learn not just from Charlie but from other attendees.
