Date: 24th - 28th October 2016
Autumn is, for most photographers, the favourite season, and autumn in the Cairngorms is a sight to behold. The hillsides of birch, oak, beech and rowan explode with colour and provide a wonderful palette for the camera, especially when reflected in the lochs and rivers streaming from the hills.
The rugged beauty of the area offers a wealth of opportunity to experiment with some different techniques. The weather in Scotland changes rapidly and a sudden fall off in the quality of the light is the perfect time to try out some ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) or multiple exposures. Such techniques are controllable to a certain degree and experimentation will give you the chance to delight in some of the happy accidents that can occur by moving the camera and combining exposures.
Although the tour will aim to teach you the fundamentals of multiple exposure/ICM photography, the most important objective is to help you to pursue your own creative direction and way of seeing. On this tour with Valda & Doug we will work on capturing the landscapes beauty in both classic ways and using alternative camera techniques.
Valda shoots with a Canon 5D MkIII and will explain the way the camera uses blend modes to diminish detail and create abstraction. Most cameras these days offer some sort of multiple exposure option and all cameras are capable of ICM with addition of an ND filter, so any camera is suitable. We will help you get the best from the functions your camera has.
The beautiful light in the Cairngorms lends itself perfectly to some subtle camera movement or multiple exposures. The rich autumn foliage and the twisted intricacy of the old trees provide an ideal opportunity to try some different techniques.
Our goal is to help you inject emotion and passion into your images in less conventional ways, to help you to see how to let go of conventional techniques and express yourself through alternative methods - not for the sake of using them, but as an additional creative tool to use when appropriate.
The days will be organised around the light, shooting sunrise and sunset when conditions are good and the days will be packed with photographic opportunities all over the Cairngorms National Park. If conditions do deteriorate then time will be used for image critique, Lightroom and Photoshop sessions.
This tour is the perfect opportunity to cast off some of the ‘rules’ of traditional landscape photography for a while! We hope you can join us for what promises to be an inspiring and creative odyssey.
Doug has been a semi-professional photographer for several years, going full time almost two years ago to pursue his dream of a creative life. He has been teaching photography to individuals and groups for six years and has also taught...
I would like to say I really enjoyed the course - a big thank you. It was a really valuable and unforgettable experience. Your huge knowledge and experience helped to make it a real success. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, the locations were great as were the hotel and food.
Excellent location, perfect timing for fall colours. Wonderful tutors and a great group of participants to boot.
Overall enjoyment of the tour 10/10 in terms of places we visited and sights seen. Doug had clearly gone to enormous lengths to find some superb and photogenic venues. Both tutors were energetic and tireless and ferried us all around. I loved this tour. Thank you.
Known Doug for a while and he was as knowledgeable as usual, he also knew the area which was a great help. First time with Valda but would be happy to have her as a tutor again. The two of then shared an enthusiasm and technical expertise which helped the group to come together and yet they allowed you the space to experiment with new techniques whilst being there if you needed them.
Good group, well led. Perfect scenery enhanced by knowledgable tutors
Both Doug and Valda were brilliant at knowing where to step in and where to leave me to my own devices. I learned skills that I am now looking forward to developing further. Truly inspirational.
I first want to thank you and your team for a wonderful introduction to your tours. I learned so much from Doug it is still sinking in! Doug was very attentive and was eager to take as long as needed until I understood something. His patience was was appreciated and I look forward to future trips with him and light and land. I now have new inspiration to go out and create art!
