The streets of New York are strangely familiar to every person who visits, made famous by the works of photographers such as Elliot Erwitt, Saul Leither, Horst Harmann, David Bailey. A photographer can’t fail to be inspired by the iconic skyline, cosmopolitan buzz of the streets or the peace of Central Park. Join Paul Sanders as he guides you around the one of the most thrilling and photogenic cities in the world.
You’ll have the opportunity to photograph the Big Apple from the heady heights above Fifth Avenue looking over The Empire State Building, capture the last light of the day as it sets Manhattan ablaze across The Hudson River or get up close and personal with the dazzling lights of Times Square.
Fall is the perfect time to visit this visual paradise with Central Park giving a colourful backdrop to the leisure time of New Yorkers. From landscape to Street, Architecture to Long exposure there is something for every photographer to experiment with.
Paul, formerly The Picture Editor of The Times newspaper, will show you around the city and will be on hand to answer any questions while giving you constructive advice to help you make the most of your time among the canyons of the city. There is also the possibility that we will be visited by Jay Maisel during the tour, to give a talk on his photography! (to be confirmed).
New York is not a city where you line up your tripods, it’s a city that has a different impact on every person who passes through it. Paul will encourage and guide you to find your own vision of NYC.
Of course no trip to New York would be complete without a little shopping trip - no not Tiffany’s (unless you want diamonds) but B&H possibly the world’s largest and most fascinating camera shop where goods are delivered to the counters by over head conveyors and you can buy pretty much anything your heart desires!
We know that accommodation in New York City is costly and that some of you may prefer to stay with friends or other options, therefore we have priced the tour including and excluding accommodation. The cost of the tour including accommodation is £1999. The cost excluding accommodation is £999. Please confirm by email when you book which option you would like.
(We have given this tour a 2 footprint as New York is very much a ‘walking’ city. Paul will be guiding you around the city on foot, however if you would like to take taxis then there is that option).
Found that travel time between locations enabled me to do some good street photography. Learnt a great deal from the tuition.
Paul explained in plain English about different techniques that could be used in our photography.
Came away very happy, found Paul to be very responsive to our needs and I managed to learn quite a lot about long exposure photography
Whenever I asked Paul he was very helpful and explained what I needed to know
It was a great trip and met some lovely like minded people.
Paul is a top bloke - friendly, open, informal and always willing to help, and it was a pleasure to spend my first photo tour with him. His talent and natural eye for spotting shapes, patterns and interesting compositions is staggering, and certainly provides inspiration. Loads of stuff planned and we didn't get a chance to do everything in the end, but we fitted loads in and it's difficult to see how much more we could've done.
In view of the very high cost of accommodation in Manhattan I think the facilities provided represented a reasonable compromise between cost and comfort.
Paul had identified possible shooting locations in advance and always consulted the group on the detail of each day's itinerary.
Paul was an enthusiastic tour leader who was always ready to provide the help and advice needed to make the most of the opportunities which were presented to us. He knew the city well and had clearly researched the locations visited. He offered suggestions for approaching the various problems posed but always encouraged us to find our own individual interpretations.
