Date: 04th - 09th July 2017
Second tour added due to demand:
For a short period at the end of June and the beginning of July each year, the Monte Sibillini National Park explodes in a profusion of colour during one of nature’s finest displays – “The Fioritura”. High on the plateau, below the isolated village of Castellucio di Norcia, lie the Piano Grande, Piano Piccolo and Piano Perduto which are transformed by the “flowering” when seemingly every colour imaginable is painted onto this awesome landscape. Our visit is timed to maximise our chances of seeing this natural masterpiece at its peak, which we will exploit with a number of visits to various breathtaking viewpoints around the area.
Outside the park, we will explore the delightful Valnerina with its jewel-like hill top towns such as Preci, Campi and Castelvecchio. These perfect little villages perch arrogantly on their individual hilltops and make wonderful subjects when the low light of either dawn or dusk warms the honey coloured stone buildings. The Valnerina was almost inaccessible until 1998 when the 4 kilometre tunnel near Spoleto was completed and for this reason, it still retains the feeling of an Italian Shangri-La amongst the dramatic mountains that in the case of Monte Vettore rise to well over 8000 feet.
When “civilisation” beckons we will take the short trip to the nearby walled town of Norcia, famed for its speciality butchers shops – the “Norcineria” which are renowned all over Italy for their amazing pork and wild boar products. Due to a history of earthquakes in the area, the town’s officials decreed in the 18th century that no buildings could be more than two storeys high. Norcia’s builders, therefore elected to favour decoration instead, embellishing many buildings with ornate balconies and intricate stone lintels and arches.
Our accommodation will be the delightful Agriturismo FonteAntica, a tranquil haven that is situated near the medieval village of Campi in the heart of the Valnerina. With only 12 rooms our numbers will be limited, but this will give us the added flexibility of not having to worry about other guests and arranging meal times and breaks to suit our photographic itinerary. The delightful restaurant is housed in an old barn and offers mouth-watering dishes made from local produce.
We will have our own vehicles to travel around the area and as always Clive and Phil will be on hand to offer photographic advice and guidance. Due to the time of year, our days will be long and meal times will be tailored to allow us to make the most of the best light. Because of this suitable short breaks will be built into the itinerary when needed.
Long term Light & Land devotee, Clive Minnitt is one of our most experienced leaders. Photography became his passion following a two and a half year back-packing adventure around the world during the late 1980’s. His love of the outdoors coupled...
Excellent tour leaders who worked very hard to make sure everyone had a great experience on this tour. Made the tour fun. Very talented professionals who shared their knowledge and created a rewarding and enjoyable tour. Thank you to both Clive and Phil.
Excellent photographic support and instruction. Enjoyed the tour very much. Nice balance of recuperative time and photographic time. Wonderful to see the small hilltop villages. Excellent stay at Fonte Antica. Great support from Emily in the UK.
They had obviously done a lot of research into the locations. What I particularly liked was the flexibility in the choice of locations to fit in with the weather conditions.
Both Clive and Phil were very helpful, and very approachable if you had questions. They were always very positive with their comments and attitude.
