We are delighted to be able to offer team building workshops that look to explore peoples view of the world through photographic self-expression, they are led by a team of specialist photographers, each with immense experience of working with people from a range of different occupations and taking them outside the comfort zone of their normal working environment.

Through the remarkable self-revealing medium of photography, people can understand more about their own approach to leadership through the images they create and other people’s responses to them.

Creating photographic images removes people from their usual preoccupations with measurable reality, their usual hurried pace of life and their usual means of communication using words and figures.  It allows them to discover a simple yet profound way of expressing themselves where aesthetics of balance, shape, geometry, light harmony and meaning all come to the fore.

Workshops

Workshops can be structured in a number of ways, the two most common are:

A half-day session as part of a company away-day, where people use the photographic medium to help them step outside their work and stretch their normal perceptions before focusing back in on their current preoccupations and issues of direct relevance to the job.

A full day workshop where people are enabled to explore current themes and preoccupations in depth and to reach conclusions that they can take back to the workplace.

Each programme is tailored to the needs of the group by careful discussion and planning.  Practical projects are a key element of each programme, whether set in a rural landscape or urban community environments.

Sample Programme for a 1 day workshop

Breakfast with an introduction to the workshop, discussing outcomes, agenda, roles, ground rules.  We also look at technical and aesthetic considerations – the basics of composition, line and form, harmony and balance, basics of exposure.

Communication at work

Group exercise – key elements of excellent communication.

Communication without words: the power of photography (presentation and discussion).

Exercise – write captions for six well known photographs (exercise in attempting to distil in words the key message received from a photograph).

First Project

Participants work in small groups and are given two hours to complete a project within the immediate vicinity of the training centre (which can be urban or rural).  This project normally reflects some aspect or preoccupation of the company, for example:

- To produce a sequence of images which reflect the company culture or values

- To produce a photographic report on some relevant theme – for example leadership, teamwork, profit, stress, innovation or change

- The need to express themselves in an unfamiliar medium often gives people tremendous creative stimulus and frees them to think in new ways about the core issues they   face at work.

Project review – participants return to base and review their experiences and reflections in a plenary session.  Meanwhile, the photographs are being developed and printed, ready for discussion.  When they are ready each group presents its images to the other groups and receives feedback on the extent to which they had succeeded in conveying their original message.

A light lunch follows.

Second Project

The group is spilt into two or three small teams and they are all given the same brief.  Each group will have two hours to interpret the brief and to produce a single set of photographs which, in their view, best expresses the brief that they have been asked to meet.

The teams gather and the images are printed ready for each group to present in a plenary session.  The performance of the teams is reviewed on a mixture of grounds:

- On the extent of which each team has met the brief it was set

- The quality of the teamwork to reach the results

- The clarity and subtlety of the messages conveyed

- On technical and aesthetic values

The workshop ends with a question and answer session.
