Sign up for our course and move your photography to the next level! The sessions will cover the technical and creative basics you need to understand in order to take control of your image-making process.
Learn about the three pillars of photography – shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Understand depth of field and the exposure triangle. Explore the characteristics of light and how it affects your photographs.
Study the rules of composition and discover how filters work. Develop your own project and, finally, let us produce a print of one photograph you have made that you are happy to have on your wall!
Short assignments can be done between sessions, and course material will be provided.
Your tutor is Astrid McGechan, who will also be at hand in between sessions for advice. The six sessions will be approx. 1 hour 15 mins long and are delivered via zoom.

Photographing with a purpose: Why am I taking this picture?
SESSION 2 - Wednesday 7th April 2021
The Exposure and its unit - the Stop
Aperture: Effect on depth of field and shutter speed. When to set the aperture manually
Composition: Rule of Thirds. Placing of the horizon
SESSION 3 - Wednesday 14th April 2021
Shutter speed: Effect on aperture. Effect on subject we photograph
Composition: Lead-in lines. Symmetry

SESSION 4 - Wednesday 21st April 2021
Focus Modes
Light: Types of light and how it affects our photographs
Composition: White patches and dark edges. Relationships. Simplicity
SESSION 5 - Wednesday 28th April 2021
Light: Colour temperature and white balance
Composition: Perspective and Viewpoint. Shapes
Shutter Speed: Intentional camera movement (ICM) and Panning
SESSION 6 - Wednesday 5th May 2021
Post Production Basics: Electronic storage, image file types and image resolution. Sharing, printing or displaying photographs. Simple post production techniques
