What could be more quintessentially English than a stunning Beech woodland at dawn in the spring as the sun rises, casting its warm rays over a carpet of bluebells. Add a fine mist and we have photographic heaven!

No landscape photographers’ portfolio is complete without some glorious images of a perfect bluebell wood. That is what we aim to help you capture during the dawn shoot on this one day workshop, with Doug Chinnery and Valda Bailey in Savernake Forest near Marlborough. Light and Land have been granted special access by the landowners, into one of the finest Beech woodlands in England. It has a breath-taking display of bluebells as far as the eye can see.
We have selected this wood as the forest floor is ‘tidy’, the trees are tall and straight and at the time the bluebells are emerging, the Beech foliage is just springing into life giving a zinging fresh lime green splash to the images. The bluebells here grow in an amazing dense carpet that spreads thickly in all directions, allowing for those sumptuous images we all fall in love with.
As always, with a natural phenomena like the emergence of bluebells, we are at the mercy of the seasons and so, while we have selected the date for the workshop to be right at what should be the absolute peak of the flowering season, the bluebells can be early or late and even Light and Land can’t control these things (although we will do our very best for you!)
As you will be with Doug and Valda, you can be assured of tuition on making classic style images of the bluebells and more creative interpretations, based on the capabilities of your camera, using ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) and ME (Multiple Exposures).
The first part of the workshop will run from just before dawn to get the best light through to breakfast. Then the second half of the workshop will be held at Marlborough Golf club in conjunction with Fotospeed. Here, Doug and Valda will, as time allows, give you some insight into their image processing workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop through to print. The screen will be recorded and after the workshop you will be sent a link so you can download the video to re-watch this training again back at home as often as you wish.
Due to time constraints on the day, to make sure you get a print on Fotospeed paper to take home, you will be able to send a favourite image of yours in to Light and Land ahead of the workshop. Fotospeed will print this before you arrive. We will also be printing on the day, but time may not allow to process and print everyone’s images from the morning but we will do our very best and who knows, we may be able to work miracles (this is Light and Land and Fotospeed, after all!)
This promises to be a full day of creativity and learning and we hope you can join us.
The workshop will run from approx 5am (just before sunrise) and finish at approx 12.30pm. Detailed pre-workshop notes with exact details will be sent out soon after booking.
