What could be more quintessentially English than a stunning Beech woodland at dawn in the spring, as the sun rises, casting its warm rays over a carpet of bluebells. Add a fine mist and we have photographic heaven!

No landscape photographer's portfolio is complete without some glorious images of a perfect bluebell wood. This is what we aim to help you capture during the dawn shoot on this one day photography workshop with Andy Farrer in Savernake Forest near Marlborough. Light and Land have been granted special access by the landowners into one of the finest Beech woodlands in England. It has a breath-taking display of bluebells as far as the eye can see.

This is what we aim to help you capture during the dawn shoot on this one day workshop with Andy Farrer in Savernake Forest near Marlborough. Light and Land have been granted special access by the landowners into one of the finest Beech woodlands in England. It has a breath-taking display of bluebells as far as the eye can see.

We have selected this wood as the forest floor is ‘tidy’, the trees are tall and straight and at this time the bluebells are emerging and the Beech foliage is just springing into life giving a zinging fresh lime green splash to the images. The bluebells here grow in an amazing dense carpet that spreads thickly in all directions, allowing for those sumptuous images we all fall in love with.

As always, with a natural phenomena like the emergence of bluebells, we are at the mercy of the seasons and so, while we have selected the date for the workshop to be right at what should be the absolute peak of the flowering season, the bluebells can be early or late and even Light and Land can’t control these things (although we will do our very best for you!)

As you will be with Andy, you can be assured of tuition directed at making classic style images of the bluebells and more creative interpretations, based on the capabilities of your camera.

The first part of the workshop will run from just before dawn through to breakfast. Then the second half of the workshop will be held at Marlborough Golf club in conjunction with Fotospeed. Here, Andy will, as time allows, give you some insight into their image processing workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop through to print.

This promises to be a full day of creativity and learning and we hope you can join us.

The workshop will run from approx 5am (just before sunrise) and finish at approx 12.30pm. Detailed pre-workshop notes with exact details will be sent out soon after booking.

Thoroughly enjoyable workshop - fantastic location, good weather and excellent tutor in Andy Farrer!

I arrived just in time at 5am after more than an hours drive (with 2 missed turnings). The rest of the group were already there (bar 1) and we soon headed into the bluebell wood. I've photographed bluebell woods many times (inc West Woods) but never before at dawn, so it was great to be there to experience the early morning light. We stayed for over 3 hours and we made many amazing images amongst the beautiful carpets of bluebells in the beech wood. However, I felt Andy the leader didn't really explain things to start with and didn't offer much guidance to the clients and he was taking his own pictures. The pre tour notes said he would be showing creative techniques inc ICM which some people may have wanted. I'm personally experienced with doing ICM, but anyway. May be we had to ask for advice, but I'm not sure if anyone did. The notes made it sound as though we would be in a private and exclusive area of Savernake Forest with special landowner permission. But, this wasn't the case as West Woods is publicly accessible. Anyway, the bluebell display in these woods is always marvellous, so never mind. Sam from L&L was also there and it was good to speak to him about things photographic, inc the Nikon mirrorless Z which I'm sure I'll treat myself to one day. I suppose I could have stayed there much longer and tried some ICM or whatever. But anyway, we were promised the treat of breakfast and the following print workshop. Bacon rolls were fine but could have been a bigger spread. We were shown how to process the images in Lightroom, but as I mainly use Photoshop it was interesting but? Seeing the different Fotospeed papers was useful and having one of our newly taken images processed and printed was excellent. I'll probably get it mounted and framed. So thank you to the Light and Land team. Roger C
