Our Liverpool photography workshop will take place in June 2022 with Astrid McGechan and Charlie Waite. The ‘Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City’ was a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 2004 to 2021 - testament to the historical significance of the development of port and city, which accelerated in the 18th century and has taken an interesting positive turn lately.

We will start our Cosmopolitan Liverpool workshop at the city's Metropolitan Cathedral, a spectacular building, the likes of which one is hard pressed to find elsewhere. The group will then move to the city’s waterfront with its eclectic mix of old and new architecture, where we will have countless opportunities to capture Liverpool’s cosmopolitan character and rustic charm.

Liverpool Photography Workshop - Liverpool Cathedral & Waterfront Photography

The ‘Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City’ was a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 2004 to 2021 - testament to the historical significance of the development of port and city, which accelerated in the 18th century and has taken an interesting positive turn lately. We will start our workshop at Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral, a spectacular building, the likes of which one is hard pressed to find elsewhere. The group will then move to the city’s waterfront with its eclectic mix of old and new architecture, where we will have countless opportunities to capture Liverpool’s cosmopolitan character and rustic charm.

Liverpool was described as the “New York of Europe” by the Bankers’ Magazine as far back as 1851. That was a reflection of its status as a powerhouse of commerce and industry. In its heyday, Liverpool’s commercial success exceeded even that of London. Its wealth gave rise to the construction of grand buildings, and almost every architectural style from the last 300 years can be found in the city, with more than 2500 buildings having listed status.

Approaching the city from the water offers a unique perspective on its distinctive waterfront, with the Pier Head and the Three Graces at its centre, so we’ll hop on to the ferry for a short round trip. You might find yourself humming Gerry Marsden’s “Ferry, Cross the Mersey”, or perhaps one of the Beatles’ songs, for the rest of the day. The Beatles are of course at the centre of Liverpool’s reputation as a cultural hub and their legacy is ever-present to the discerning visitor.

The abundance of subject matter will allow us to use various techniques and shoot in colour or black & white, capture strong graphics, abstract shapes, colours and reflections as well as street scenes and architecture. Your tutors for the day will be Astrid McGechan and Light & Land founder Charlie Waite, who will be at hand to help you develop your vision and explore different approaches, so that you can be sure to return with memorable images of one of England’s most exciting waterfront cities.

The workshop will run from 10am to 5pm.

An enjoyable and inspiring workshop. The small group allowed plenty of time with Charlie and Astrid. It was well organised and offered a nice balance between subject variety and fostering creativity without being rushed.

Good day, well organised and photographic expert advice and suggestions readily available. Also excellent follow up review of selection of photographs with very helpful constructive criticism. A great learning experience in good company.

I thought that the workshop was good but that, given the time available, we could have spent a little bit less time on talk at the beginning.

Geoffrey Bignell - 26th Feb, 2020

Enjoyable and informative.

A great day exploring Liverpool

Kevan - 17th May, 2019

A great Days photography with good advice from Charlie and Astrid emphasising how to approach and address the workflow of taking a photograph. Although I grew up in the City it was great to look at it as a photographer rather than take it for granted.

Ken - 17th May, 2019

Astrid and Charlie were very friendly and helpful on the day. Some very good advice was given and the group were a friendly bunch too. I enjoyed photographing in the Metropolitan Cathedral the most and made some very good images.

David - 17th May, 2019

The information and details of the workshops that are emailed out is done so very professionally. There was such a wide variety of photographic opportunity available during the workshop in Liverpool. The atmosphere created by the instructors on the day made it for an enjoyable experience. I would certainly recommend light and land workshops to colleagues and friends.
