Cotswolds Lavender

If you are a gardener with an overwhelming passion for the colour purple and lilac, then the famous names of ‘Arctic Snow’, ‘Cedar Blue’, ‘Grosso’, ‘Hidcote’, ‘Imperial Gem’ ‘Twickle Purple’ and the grand old big Daddy of them all, ‘Old English’ will no doubt be familiar to you.

But to those of us with modest botanical knowledge, and where photography has greater appeal than weeding and hoeing, these names will mean little until the gardener reveals to us that they belong to the plant that many of us travel nearly a thousand miles to Provence to photograph, a plant with the most intoxicating fragrance and memorable colour; lavender!

Humans can be impulsive and so why can’t Light & Land? We have not gone to Provence this year so on Tuesday July 5th, we are going to photograph the lavender… in England!

Any photographer who shares a passion for photographing a sea of bluebells will surely be drawn to making images of lavender. We will visit the beautiful display of lavender in one of the largest lavender farms in the south of England: Snowshill in the heart of Cotswold Country.

Our workshop will begin with a presentation by Sue Bishop about the techniques and aesthetic considerations of flower photography at a nearby hotel.  We will then go out into the lavender fields where we will put the theory into practise with Sue’s help and guidance!

It may be that you will return home at the end of the day without memorising any of the names of the twenty or so varieties of lavender at Snowshill. But, nevertheless, we would hope that you will be rewarded with some stunning images and we can all be forgiven if we caption our images just… lavender!
