The Dolomites are amongst Europe’s greatest sights with jagged peaks aplenty and beautiful valleys throughout the area. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a photographer’s dream with changeable weather offering dramatic light, great shapes and textures to play with and explore.

Our Dolomites photography tour in 2020 will be primarily based in Alta Badia otherwise known as the “heart of the Dolomites” so we can explore various areas of this dramatic landscape. This early summer period features flowers bursting into the meadows and the area is relatively quiet before the summer rush. There is usually snow still on the high peaks offering a great variety of image making opportunities.

Our first return trip in summer 2019 was a huge success and with Sam Gregory you have a guide who has travelled there extensively over the last 10 years.

Dolomites Photography Tour - The Dolomites Landscape Photography

Our first return trip in summer 2019 was a huge success and with Sam you have a guide who has travelled there extensively over the last 10 years.

Even from the very first moment of this tour the views will be breath-taking. The 2-hour drive from Innsbruck down into Italy and the Dolomites is a great way to whet the photographic appetite. Our base in Alta Badia offers an excellent starting point for various forays into this dramatic landscape. On our doorstep are great views of the Gruppo Sella range with the early summer flowers starting to appear in the meadows and waterfalls carved into the rock. The mighty Sassongher mountain is also just a few moments away and beautifully demonstrates the majesty of this region.

During the tour we will be exploring various high mountain passes which offer sweeping vistas into the valleys and also up-close views of these impressive peaks. In this early Summer period the weather can still be a little changeable which is ideal for capturing some of the spirit of this area. Snow still clings to the high peaks and as such we have a wide variety of shooting opportunities. The mountain roads wind around the Gruppo Sella and offer various views from differing aspects and depending on the weather you can expect everything from shards of light to dense moody mist and everything in-between.

We’ll visit various high passes, one or two with a cable car, to experience views from the top of this dramatic mountain group. There’ll also be time to discover a little more about the history and geography of these high impressive peaks with a talk from a local historical expert. After a few days exploring Alta Badia and its surrounding areas including rivers, lakes and alpine meadows, we’ll venture to the picturesque Alpe di Siusi, which is Europe’s largest mountain plateau. This sublime area offers wonderful views of the Sasso Lungo, Sasso Piatto and Sciliar peaks. This area is off-limits to public cars and as such we’ll be spending our penultimate day and final night here to get plenty of chance to explore on foot and with the provided local bus service.

During the tour we will also make time for some image reviews and post-processing discussions at our hotel base to help you not only on the trip but into the future. Summer sunrises are pretty early and so we will try to mix up the hours to cover some early and late sessions as well as plenty of daytime shooting opportunities. We will be primarily getting around with our own vehicle but there will be some walking involved due to the nature of the landscape. A reasonable level of general fitness would be required with the ability to walk short-medium distances over a light-moderate gradient. Also, we will be visiting various high passes (upto 3,100m) so a comfort with heights is recommended.

An absolutely amazing tour amongst Europe’s most superb and dramatic mountains. Sam certainly knows the area and took us to easily accessible views in the heart of the peaks - and all at the perfect time of day. He was very attentive to each participant’s needs and level of photographic experience, advising each as necessary whilst giving us the space to “make” our own personal images. Combine that with almost perfect photographic conditions with rainbows on request, which has ensured that I have returned home with an SD card full of amazing images. A FANTASTIC TOUR!!! 👍

I really enjoyed the trip and learnt a lot about using my camera. Excellent guidance from Sam Gregory, excellent locations and superb hotels.

At the risk of hyperbole, this was simply a wonderful trip in a fabulous area with enormous photographic potential. The hotels were excellent as were the food and the logistical arrangements. The key to the success of the trip, though, was the leader, Sam Gregory. He was very organised, had good knowledge of the area to optimise the photographic opportunities and he imparts his considerable photographic wisdom with a light touch and an admirable humility. I learned a great deal from him on composition, technique and post-processing. I could not have asked for anything more from this trip.

For tours outside of the UK, we will select a recommended flight which will depart from a London airport to the destination. In most cases (unless stated otherwise), the tour leaders will greet you at the destination airport from this flight and return you to the airport at the end of the tour.

Please DO NOT book your flights until advised to do so by the office. Tours have to become viable before we select the recommended flight.

Once a tour has enough bookings to make it viable, you will receive an email to alert you that the recommended flights have been uploaded to your client area on the website.

You are welcome to make alternative travel arrangements. If doing so, please ensure you are at the destination airport for the arrival time of the recommended flight to ensure you can take the transfer to the hotel. Alternatively you can arrange your own transfers and meet the group at the hotel on the first night.
