Dorset and Wiltshire

With the counties of Devon, Somerset and Hampshire as their neighbours, Dorset and Wiltshire are arguably two of the most popular counties for photography. Dorset is where Charlie has made his home and his affection for the county is well known.

In the two days that Charlie will accompany you, you'll be photographing many of the delightful inland locations and possibly some of the famous coastline that Dorset is known for.

During these precious few days it might pay to remember that it was the county of Dorset that Thomas Hardy wrote of frequently and it is not hard to see why. Dorset’s Jurassic Coastline has evolved over 185 million years of geological history and is now England’s first natural UNESCO world heritage site. The Jurassic Coast stretches from the mouth of the river Ex at Exmouth in East Devon with Dorset claiming the greater portion as it stretches from the exceptional town of Lyme Regis with its famous Cob along the great arc beginning in Lyme Bay and onward along the truly magnificent and amazing phenomena of Chesil beach toward Weymouth. Here this stunning coastline doubles back around the great Lighthouse of Portland Bill and on through Symington Mills, Durdle Door, Lulworth, Kimmeridge and finally around Durlston Head to Swanage. Many of these iconic locations will be familiar in name, yet perhaps will not all have been photographed. We shall hope to have the opportunity to visit and photograph one or two of these coastal locations aong with some fantastic unknown hidden treasures inland.

However landscape photography does not go hand in hand with haste so when we do find ourselves in a particular location where the lighting conditions are favourable to us, we shall take full advantage and linger a while. But as we all know so well, weather can be capricious and the locations and our timings at those locations will be very weather dependent.

Approximately two thirds of the tour will be spent photographing inland. Up to the central and northern part of the county can be found some gems that have as much photographic merit as the fine Dorset coastline; Win Green in Wiltshire, Knowlton Church, the delightful Gold Hill in Shaftesbury and Sturminster Newton Mill will be just a few of the spots in mind to be visited.

When on location, Charlie will, as always, be on hand to assist and guide each member of the group regardless of whether they are just at the start of learning about their photography or whether they are at an advanced level. In the evening, or if rain momentarily stops play, our time will not be wasted as we will be inviting participants to bring a selection of images with them for discussion and constructive critique. Alternatively, there may be the opportunity to visit the Catheral City of Salisbury for some evening photography.

This is a tour that Charlie has been looking forward to immensely and he's excited to be able to join you in one of his favourite counties.

Tour is limited to 8 participants.
