Greenland

On the central West Coast of Greenland lies one of the planets hidden gems- Disko Bay. This week-long tour will be based in the small town of Ilulissat, the gateway to explore the incredible Disko Bay.

The Kangia Glacier, situated in the ice fjord close to Ilulissat, is the most active iceberg producing glacier in the northern hemisphere. From this glacier, icebergs the size of towns, calve away and begin their journey into the open ocean. From our base in the town, we are ideally situated to photograph the landscape and the icebergs, from both on the water and from the shoreline.

Our group will spend time on small boats photographing everything from the buildings and settlements, to the giant icebergs in the bay and out into open water. In mid-summer the water tends to be very calm and the icebergs themselves create protection from the deep water swell, leading to still water and very often reflections also, both of which are great to photograph.

To top this trip off, we will as a group take a boat to Eqi glacier to the north. Here we will see icebergs calving into the sea and also have a chance to walk from the shoreline to the second biggest body of ice on earth. In July, we would expect to find aqua marine rivers of meltwater flowing through the pure white ice. This section of the trip will require camping for a couple of nights to spend as much time as possible exploring the rivers.

Our hotel is the world’s northernmost 4 start hotel. The views from the rooms are absolutely breathtaking, with icebergs far bigger than the hotel itself, in the distance.

Please note, the walk to the inland ice will be relatively strenuous. We will not need to carry camping equipment as this will be provided on site but we will need to carry camera and basic clothing/washing equipment for 5 or so miles to reach our location. A reasonable degree of fitness will be required in order to do this element of the tour.
