Our Hidden Dorset photography workshop with Sam Gregory will take place in October. Sam is proud to call Dorset home and enjoys exploring this beautiful area in depth with our guests. This one day workshop focuses on the rolling countryside at the top end of the county. With sweeping vistas, interlocking lines in the landscape and even some autumnal woodland on show.
This photography workshop will encourage guests to hone their compositional skills and discuss various ways to interpret the landscape around us. Depending on conditions we will visit 2-3 locations in and around North Dorset and across the Cranborne Chase area.

Dorset Photography Workshop - Dorset Landscape Photography
Sam Gregory is proud to call Dorset home and enjoys exploring this beautiful area in depth with our guests. This one day workshop focuses on the rolling countryside at the top end of the county. With sweeping vistas, interlocking lines in the landscape and even some Autumnal woodland on show. This workshop will encourage guests to hone their compositional skills and discuss various ways to interpret the landscape around us. Depending on conditions we will visit 2-3 locations in and around North Dorset and across the Cranborne Chase area.
We will be focussing on these inland areas and choosing our locations based on the prevailing conditions on the day to make the most of the light and weather. Whilst we plan to visit 2 or 3 locations it’s worth remembering landscape photography does not go hand in hand with haste. As such, if we do find ourselves in a particular location with favourable conditions we will take full advantage and may linger accordingly. The weather can be varied at this time of year and depending on the season we may also benefit from some early Autumnal colour in the woodland areas.
When on location, Sam will always be on hand to assist and guide each member of the group. Whatever your level and experience, Sam will offer the relevant guidance and inspiration to help you improve your compositions and vision. If rain or inclement weather does impinge on the day, your time will not be wasted as Sam will be able to offer a couple of composition and vision based talks to discuss the image making process in more detail. There may also be some time for image reviews and brief critiques from our time shooting on the day.
Sam will meet the group at 9.30am at the Coppleridge Inn, Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, SP7 9HW for a short talk before heading out for the day. The workshop will finish at 4.30pm.
good day shame about weather
This one day Dorset workshop was a very enjoyable experience, the venue for the meet and greet and end of day get together was comfortable, accommodating and very easy to find. Both Charlie and Sam were engaging, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable instructors. The location choices were varied and challenging enough to push you photographically. All in all an extremely well thought one day workshop.
This is my 2nd Light & Land workshop but the 1st that centres on being out with a camera (whereas the other was about exhibiting and selling). Both Charlie Waite and Sam Gregory made for excellent workshop leaders; both highly knowledgeable and experienced in the art & craft of landscape photography. It also helps that I very much enjoy and admire both of their photography, and their friendly and enjoyable to be around too! The day was well organised with plans to cover all weather conditions! Charlie & Sam both live in Dorset and know the area better than most, especially when it comes to photography spots. We worked with the weather and got out as soon as possible to enjoy fine conditions, then later the chosen location was too wet and windy so we opted for plan b - nearby woods. At the start of the day and at each location we were given guidance as a group and then individually as Charlie & Sam wondered around to offer advice and answer questions. We also had enough time to ask questions on technique etc throughout the day. We ended by reviewing some of the photos taken by the group through the day. Seeing the variety of styles and subjects captured in a relatively small area helped me to see just how much opportunity there is, and also how individual styles can shine through.
Knowledge and inspiration.
Fantastic day ,Charlie and Sam very helpful, excellent tuition, great location many thanks
Great day out with Charlie and Sam. Both were really helpful, gave lots of suggestions and chose some great locations to photograph
The same as above (just the one workshop / tour)
I enjoyed the two adjacent day workshops - an introduction to landscape photography, which was great.
Showed us how to respond more deeply to landscape and be prepared to look ... think ... possibly take/make a photograph.
