Just 80 miles south of the English coast, between Guernsey and Normandy, lies the hidden jewel that is the Isle of Sark. Covering 2.2 square miles and with a resident population of only 600, the island is about 3 miles long and a mile and a half wide and yet it boasts over 40 miles of what must surely be some of the most spectacular and picturesque coastline anywhere in the world. A visit to Sark is a step back in time to another era where peace and tranquillity prevail. The fact that there are no cars on the island creates an enchanting atmosphere, unique in today’s bustling, non-stop world.

Isle of sark

Sark is a walker’s paradise with numerous bays and headlands to explore. There are actually two islands which are joined by a thin isthmus, “La Coupee”, which is 300 ft long with 330 ft drops on either side to the clear blue ocean below. Nowhere on the island is far away, giving us plenty of opportunities to explore new locations and also revisit favourites during our stay. There is no public street lighting on the island, and hence very little light pollution, a fact that has led to Sark being the first island community, anywhere in the world, to be granted “Dark Skies” status. At night the milky-way stretches from horizon to horizon and individual stars seem close enough to reach out and touch!

Our visit is timed to coincide with the sumptuous abundance of wildflowers that burst forth throughout the island in early spring. The lush woodlands are carpeted with bluebells, red campion and wild garlic whilst the cliff paths, fields and headlands deliver a profusion of primroses, thrift and celandines.

This abundance of photographic subject matter and an atmosphere that encourages contemplation along with detailed examination will be beautifully complemented by our choice of accommodation. We are delighted to be staying in the sumptuously luxurious Stocks Hotel which is perfectly situated in the centre if the island. Nestling in attractive gardens with its own swimming pool and 23 individually decorated rooms, Stocks will serve as a perfect location to immerse ourselves in a photographic exploration of the island. Meal times will be arranged to ensure that we maximise the opportunities to photograph at the very best times of day and our daily schedule will be flexible enough to allow for as much (or as little) relaxation as each individual desires.

In order to give each participant a greater focus and direction for their photography, it is intended that everyone will leave at the end of the week with a coherent and self supporting body of work suitable for the creation of an artist’s book via on-demand publishing. Phil and Clive will guide you through the process of image selection, design, textual content, page layout etc. and aim to ensure that you leave Sark with a fantastic souvenir of your stay.

At the beginning of the week, Phil and Clive will lead a number of escorted walks to the island’s highlights and will, of course, always be available to assist you with any aspect of the photographic process. As the week continues and everyone’s familiarity with the island grows, one to one sessions will be set up to review everyone’s progress and to suggest alternative and/or complementary subjects that would serve to enhance the overall appeal of the images obtained.

The self-contained nature of the island offers a great opportunity to revisit locations that appeal to you and perhaps improve on specific images as the week progresses. Through both one-to-one and group feedback sessions, Phil and Clive will be available to give constant advice, encouragement and support during your exploration of this island paradise.

This tour offers a fantastic opportunity to completely escape the pressures of modern living and immerse yourself in the pursuit of photographic perfection. At the end of the week, you will leave with your own personal record of island life that will be perfect for sharing with family, friends and if you desire it, the wider public. All this whilst being caressed by the pure luxury of the fantastic Stocks hotel and the peace and tranquillity for which the Isle of Sark is renowned.

A trip that is destined to live long in the memory.
