Jewels of the Highlands – Torridon and the Isle of Skye

During this 10 day / 9 night tour we will spend time in two of Scotlands most photogenic areas : Torridon in Wester Ross, and the Isle of Skye. Visiting both locations in Winter means that the mountains may be snow capped, the areas will be very quiet, and the light remains low-angled and soft throughout the day – ideal for landscape photography.

Situated just 60 miles west of Inverness, Glen Torridon is an area of outstanding natural beauty that is characterized by steep mountains that rise up on both sides as it stretches from Kinlochewe to Torridon village. The first 4 nights of our workshop will be based on the banks of Loch Maree, and is ideally situated for exploring Glen Torridon and the surrounding area. Loch Torridon, Loch Clair and Loch Maree will all be on our doorstep and provide fantastic photographic potential at both dawn, dusk and throughout the day. We will also have time to explore some of the villages of Wester Ross, such as Shieldaig, Diabaig, and Applecross – the latter in particular being accessed either by a rather beautiful coastal road with spectacular views of Skye, or via a dramatic road which winds its way to the top of a mountain! The village itself has one of the finest inns around, with a fantastic seafood menu.

For the second part of our workshop, we will drive across to Portree on the Isle of Skye, where we will be based for 5 nights. Skye has some of the most dramatic scenery in the world and as a result has become a very popular tourist destination. In addition to the unique geology, the dramatic, changeable light makes this area so compelling for making landscape images. During winter the island becomes much quieter from a tourism perspective, so we will probably have some of the locations to ourselves during December. We will explore much that the island has to offer, taking time to photograph the play of light on the mountains and rapidly changing weather. The Storr (20 mins) and the Quiraing (35-40 mins) are relatively close to our base in Portree and offer incredible potential for landscape images. The Storr can be photographed from ground level with several compositions easily accessible on foot; if conditions are favourable we may attempt to walk up to the base of the Old man of Storr; however safety will take priority here and we will only attempt this in good weather. Other areas that we can visit during our stay include Talisker bay, the Fairy Glen, Glen Sligachan, the Fairy Pools, Neist point with its dramatic lighthouse, and the fabulous beach at Elgol with views across to the Cuillin mountains. All of these locations are within an hour or so of our base.

We may also attempt some astrophotography during our trip if skies are clear – the workshop dates coincide with no moon during night shooting hours, and we may even see the aurora borealis if we are fortunate.

It is not expected that any of the walks on this workshop will be particularly strenuous, with the exception of the climb to the Old Man of Storr on Skye (weather permitting – note that we can make an itinerary for those not wishing to do this).   Good waterproof walking boots suitable for boggy terrain will be essential. A waterproof jacket, layers, and walking trousers will also be needed to cope with changeable and sometimes dramatic weather conditions.

Tour participants can be picked up at Inverness airport on the morning of Friday 30th November 2018, and dropped off again at Inverness on Sunday 9th December (late morning) for those needing to catch flights home.

This tour will be led by Mark McColl and Antony Spencer.
