There is no finer time to explore its secrets than in the depths of winter when the days are short, the sun stays low in the sky giving soft light throughout, the weather is ever changing coming in from the turbulent North Sea. Never busy, in February we will have the coast virtually to ourselves and for this short break we will use every moment of light to immerse ourselves in the delights of this place from sunrise to sunset.

Northumberland - Coast and Castles

Northumberland is Englands best kept coastal secret. Hidden away on the north east coast, its solitude and wide empty beaches are treasured by those ‘in the know’.

Locations will include the iconic (and it is truly iconic) Bamburgh Castle. Is there any other castle in the world that occupies such a perfect position for the photographer, behind Marram graced dunes, beside the widest of sandy beaches with glorious foreground rocks to fill our frames? We will photograph the ruined majesty of Dunstanburgh Castle, atop its cliffs with stunning reflective boulders wave washed in the foreground and also spend time on ancient Lindisfarne with its sculpted castle and detail filled harbour. The wide causeway, long crossed by pilgrims also makes for stunning minimalist images, the sky reflecting in the vast acres of wet sands, the skies filled with the cries of Curlew - a wild and magical place.

The days and locations will also afford opportunities to work on details. Many of the beaches hold wonderful rock formations that cry out for careful abstract details and fine macro images that will expand our compositional skills. The dunes are sometimes inhabited by semi-wild ponies too and these can make for touching images.

The diversity of the location offers the perfect opportunity to experiment with some ICM or multiple exposures. Such techniques are controllable to a certain degree and experimentation will give you the chance to delight in some of the happy accidents that can occur by moving the camera and combining exposures.  Although the tour will aim to teach you the fundamentals of multiple exposure/ICM photography, the most important objective is to help you to pursue your own creative direction and way of seeing.

Valda shoots with a Canon 5D MkIII and will explain the way the camera uses blend modes to diminish detail and create abstraction. Most cameras these days offer some sort of multiple exposure option and all cameras are capable of ICM with addition of an ND filter, so any camera is suitable.

This tour is the perfect opportunity to cast off some of the rules of traditional landscape photography for a while! Doug and Valda hope you can join them and discover the coast and castles of Northumberland for yourself. You are sure to fall in love with the place.”
