Our Riverside Colours of Dartmoor photography workshop will take place in November 2022. Always a favourite part of Devon at this time of year and a fitting finale to autumn are the valleys of Dartmoor. The ancient trees and rugged valleys are breathtaking. Often after much of the UK has passed the best of the Autumn colours, the valleys of Dartmoor are approaching their peak.

The deep wooded Teign Gorge hosts not only a wealth of wildlife but an abundance of picturesque scenes, bursting with fast flowing water and trees. Fingle Bridge is a 17th-century stone arch bridge carrying an unclassified road over the River Teign near Drewsteignton, within Dartmoor National Park.

Your tutor for our Dartmoor photography workshop is Andy Farrer who is known for his skilful use of colour and compelling compositions. Andy will show you his favourite Dartmoor riverside locations and teach you how to get the best results.

Riverside Colours of Dartmoor Photography Workshop

Dartmoor Photography Workshop - Dartmoor Landscape Photography

The picturesque tri-arched bridge is now classed as a listed building.

At the top of the Gorge is Castle Drogo, the last castle to be built in England. Downstream from the bridge, you will find Fingle Woods which are now being restored by The National Trust and the Woodland Trust to ensure it is preserved for future generations of humans and wildlife alike. It’s one of just a very few ancient woodlands left. Non-native species are being removed to restore it to it’s former glory.

Your tutor for this workshop is Andy Farrer, who is known for his skilful use of colour and compelling compositions. He will show you his favourite riverside locations and teach you how to get the best results. Consideration of lenses and filters to use in woodland environments are explored, as well as the use of histograms with vivid scenes to ensure the most pleasing results. Capturing “just enough” water movement to convey a sense of “being there” is also another important technique for this type of scenery.

We will meet at 9:30am and conclude around 5pm, and to maximise shooting time we ask you to bring a packed lunch.

Although not a huge walk, it is recommended to be sure-footed as some of the riverbank sections can be slippery at times.

Mr Nigel Richardson - 9th Nov, 2021

This was my second workshop with Andy, and he didn't disappoint. The location was fantastic , with such a variety of shots and compositions around every bend in the river. I came away with what I am confident will be a good handful of printable images (not managed to get any processing done yet) - thanks to Andy's calm and relaxed manner of imparting his knowledge - I would be lucky to get one on my own.

Ms Alicia Dunlop - 14th Nov, 2021

This was my 3rd workshop with Andy this year. I love his relaxed style & the hints & tips he shares as we travel from location to location. This was a beautiful location that saw us wandering along the river - we enjoyed reflections, waterfalls, water cascading over boulders & the autumnal colours of the surrounding woodland. It was a great day - thanks Andy!
