Sicily. An island the size of a country. A country within a country. A new place for us to explore together. Located in the southernmost part of Italy, the Sicilian shores are shaped by the sea; The Ionic Sea in the eastern part, the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north and the Mediterranean Sea in the southern and western, and it’s reflected in the island’s ancient name for Sicily: “Trinacria”, meaning the three-cornered island. Its most prominent landmark is Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, and one of the most active in the world.
Although it’s the largest island in the Mediterranean, it is relatively undiscovered, steeped in history ready for us to explore some of its stunning beaches, mountains, volcanoes, art, archaeology and unforgettable hospitality.
We will begin our tour on the east side of the island, the 18th century re-built city of Catania, located between the Ionian Sea and the slopes of Mount Etna. Catania is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Catania fish market is as old as the city itself and is on our itinerary for one morning. We will be up before the sun rises to ensure plenty of time here. With two local guides on hand we can get access to some wonderful sites and understand the importance of this wonderful tradition. It is one of the largest and most colourful fish markets in Sicily.
After a few days in this area exploring the remote areas close to Mt Etna, the beaches, villages and views, we will head away from the East towards the South of the island to explore the colourful countryside and olive trees. Passing through historical locations we will be photographing at different times of the day and evening with hotels and local b&bs ideally situated. After exploring the south, we will drive across the country to the coast ready to explore the northernmost corner. The landscape will change as we move locations and the salt flats at Trapani will be our home for the last section of the tour.
Each unique location has its own charm and offers something different to photograph. We will have our own private vehicle with local guides and drivers to get us to the locations on this special island. Our local guides will know all the best places to eat and they can also advise us on the traditional dishes to enhance our experience of this wonderful island.
We have chosen to make the trip 9 nights to ensure we don’t have to rush locations. Some days will have more travel time than others as this island may look small on maps but offers so much! When the light is bright, we can take to the streets to focus on the smaller detail, watch the locals going about their day and enjoy a coffee, a beer or two! Or simply take a rest at the accommodation.
The weather may still be a little unpredictable in April/May, but this can bring some fantastic photo opportunities. As we are close to the mountains, sea and Mt Etna the clouds could brew up some dramatic skies! We could also have stronger winds, so some warmer clothing (such as a jacket that you can fold away into your camera bag if it gets hot) would be recommended. Good walking shoes will be necessary as we will be walking on foot to some more remote locations and as well as your camera equipment come with an open mind, Sicily has a lot to offer.
This tour is not just about the landscape, street photography will feature here too. The Sicilians are wonderful and friendly and enjoy watching us as we are captivated by their character and charm of a unique life.
Our local guides are hard-working husband and wife Ivano and Vera. They have tailor made this tour to suit our every need and request and are sure to make this tour one to remember!
