Two hundred and seventy years ago, the botanical traveler Henry Hoare 11, began to realise his dream of creating what is now thought to be one of the finest classical gardens in the world, rivaled only by some of the Lombardian gardens in northern Italy.
Yet no Italian garden can come near to the perfectly proportioned and magnificent lake that provides the centerpiece to this truly inspirational landscape. Painters, garden designers and of course photographers have been known to gasp at first sight of this breathtaking garden.
There are almost too many examples of tree and exotic plant species to count making Stourhead one of the National Trusts most prized jewels in its portfolio of classical gardens.
At every turn, the photographer is presented with a shimmering reflection of Stourhead’s famous Pantheon along with the Palladian Bridge which offers the perfect foreground to make an image that may be reminiscent of the great painters, Claude Lorrain and Gaspar Dughet whose paintings influenced the design of these ravishing gardens.
The gardens have been used as backdrops in many major movies including the 2005 film, Pride & Prejudice and after just a few minutes of entering Stourhead gardens, its easy to see why.

Stourhead is a stone’s throw from Mere in Southern Wiltshire. Just a couple of hours from London this world class landscape garden is an absolute gem and overflowing with photographic opportunities.
This one day workshop will be lead by Charlie Waite and Andy Farrer. It will not have escaped your notice that Andy Farrer won the hugely prestigious 2015 Landscape Photographer of the Year award, Andy will guide you through the many considerations of composition and of course the techniques of exposure and filtration that provides the photographer with the confidence and ability to ‘get it right’ in camera. Charlie has been leading tours and workshops for over 25 years and never fails to inspire and encourage the participants in his photographic workshops.
Workshop timings; 10am-4.30pm approximately.
