Our Peak District photography tour 'Heather in Bloom' will take place with Verity Milligan in August. The Peak District is unquestionably one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. It’s more rugged than some of the other National Parks such as the Lake District, but that just adds to its intrigue. During late summer the Peak District becomes even more beautiful with the blooming of heather across swathes of the heathland and edges. The vibrant purple and pinks of the heather provide the perfect foreground to the millstones and tors dotted around the landscape.

However, sweeping vistas is not all the Peak District has to offer. There are plenty of wooded areas such as Bolehill Quarry, which are full of intriguing, twisted oaks and photogenic silver birch. This tour will take you to various spots across the region and provide ample opportunity to capture many different environments and compositions that can be found in the Peaks. This will be the perfect introduction to the Peak District for any curious photographer, and if you’re already familiar with this part of the UK, hopefully this tour will allow you to go deeper and really get to know this gorgeous landscape at one of the most colourful times of the year.

The Peak District Photography Tour - Peak District Landscape Photography

The Peak District is unquestionably one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. It’s more rugged that some of the other national parks such as the Lake District, but that just adds to its intrigue.

We’ll spend time at Surprise View which is situated above Hathersage and boasts views across the Hope Valley. At sunrise, there is always the chance of mist lingering in the valley and there are plenty of compositional opportunities. Down from Surprise View through Lawrence Field, we’ll explore the enigmatic Padley Gorge, allowing for the opportunity to create long exposures of the flowing water and capturing the foliage that flanks the gorge on either side. There is much to explore in this small area, including Bolehill Quarry, which is full of character and at this time of the year the bracken and birch already start to show a little of their autumn colours.

We’ll have the opportunity to explore Stanton Moor, a lovely little gem nestled further south between Stanton-in-Peak and Birchover. The moor itself is on higher ground and often catches low cloud which can be great for compelling imagery of heather and birch, both of which it has in abundance. This is one of my favourite places to photograph heather and woodland together, and there’s always compositions to be found along Stanton Edge.

The Peak District has an abundance of ‘edges’, many of which are accessible via a short, sharp uphill walk. The effort is worth it, as some of the most intriguing formations (referred to as Tors) can be found at the top. We’ll spend time exploring these locations, especially as sunset. Some of my favourites include Curbar Edge which has a herd of highland cows roaming it’s flanks, and Derwent Edge, which is a great place to photography sweeping views of Ladybower reservoir below. There’s also Bamford Edge which again looks out over Ladybower reservoir and the valley below.

One of the most recognisable spots in the entire Peaks is Mam Tor and for good reason. The ridge of Mam Tor links Rushup Edge and the western edge of Great Ridge, dominating the view from the Hope Valley below. This is cracking place for a sunrise shoot, and if the conditions are right there’s always the possibility of a cloud inversion and if that’s not feasible, the view is more than enough to entertain any photographer.

This will be the perfect introduction to the Peak District for any curious photographer, and if you’re already familiar with this part of the UK, hopefully this tour will allow you to go deeper and really get to know this gorgeous landscape at one of the most colourful times of the year.

Mr Andrew Hounslea - 11th Nov, 2021

Spectacular sunsets with the light highlighting every ripple in the landscape. The red pre-dawn glow on distant peaks. Water cascading over and around leaf strewn rapids and waterfalls. Clusters of fungi among endless stretches of beech trees below towering cliffs… All of this I experienced on this tour. I learned a lot, laughed a lot and got some photographs I am really quite proud of.

Mr Barry Cooper - 11th Nov, 2021

The Peak District offers a vast range of landscape subjects. So much to capture. It's a place where you'll want to go back for every season. Verity was our tour leader, and she was so inspirational. My photography just went up another level, thanks to Verity's insight. A great addition to the Light and Land team.
