Warsaw is a city where the glitteringly modern collides with the historically ancient while post-war Stalinist communism watches on. Warsaw Photography Tour

Warsaw is a city where the glitteringly modern collides with the historically ancient while post-war Stalinist communism watches on. How the three eras fit together makes the Polish capital a fascinating place to photograph, where today and yesterday can be seen like geological layers from street to street.

This tour will give you the opportunity to observe and photograph the unique atmosphere of a bustling and lively city that’s full of its own powerful character. We’ll shoot trams as they load and unload their commuters in the business district, and the shoppers of the grand Royal Route that runs between palaces, castles, churches and trendy stores. We’ll visit the old town, masterfully reconstructed from the rubble after the original was flattened during WWII, as well as what’s left of the Jewish ghetto that still bares the marks of its extremely dark past. Looming over the population is the imposing Palace of Science and Culture, a gift to the Poles from Stalin that many would like to send back but which makes an incredible centre piece and anchor point for the city. From the viewing platform at the top of the palace’s tower the expansive vista will give us a whole new perspective on the structure of streets and buildings below.

By looking, seeing and understanding the environment, we’ll aim to come back with a broad impression of what Warsaw is like and of the people that live there. The shorter days of the winter months will give us the chance to work with colourful city lights and glistening pavements as the residents go about their daily routines and we immerse ourselves in a little bit of Poland.

The tour will start mid-afternoon on 8th February. You can check into the hotel at 2pm and Damien will meet you in the hotel lobby. The tour will finish at approx 2pm on Monday 11th February. There will be a fair amount of walking involved in this tour so a moderate fitness level is required.

Damien specializes in street photography although he finds inspiration in almost all forms of the art. He is drawn to life, people and the atmosphere of places, times of day and culture, and is driven to communicate the extraordinary in what he experiences through the camera. Damien has been teaching street photography to groups and individuals for the last six years, and approaches workshops with the aim of challenging the way photographers see the world. He works with tremendous enthusiasm to inspire all those he teaches, is generous with his knowledge and brings a new perspective to the genre.
