Our Colours of Athens photography tour will take place in November 2026 and will be led by Peter Fenech.

Athens, the first great European capital you encounter when approaching from the Middle East, sits at a cultural crossroads where Roman heritage meets Eastern influence. Its compact centre makes it easy to explore on foot, while surrounding hills and landmarks such as Mount Lycabettus and the Acropolis provide sweeping vantage points across the valley. This blend of intimacy and scale makes Athens a wonderfully rewarding city for photographers.

This tour is designed to balance the grand and the everyday - capturing the energy of bustling streets alongside the quieter details that reveal the city’s character. Ancient ruins stand shoulder to shoulder with modern buildings, while narrow lanes strung with lights lead into lively markets and neighbourhoods filled with colour and texture. Athens feels made for photography, offering endless opportunities for both discreet street portraits and expansive cityscapes.

Among the highlights will be wandering through the colourful neighbourhood of Plaka and the hidden courtyards of Anafiotika, known for its whitewashed Cycladic houses and bright shutters. Often called ‘Little Mykonos,’ this enclave brings a touch of island life into the capital. From here, the climb up to the Acropolis offers not only a chance to photograph one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, but also to enjoy sweeping views over the city and out to the port of Piraeus. Winding through these narrow lanes, photographers will find textured walls, vivid colours, and intimate corners that reward both close-up detail and wide compositions.

We’ll also immerse ourselves in the vibrant Psyrri and Monastiraki districts, where alleys are decorated with pottery, flags, and textiles, and the atmosphere changes with the light of day. These areas are ideal for exploring travel and documentary photography, capturing small stories within the bigger picture. At Syndagma Square, the ceremonial changing of the guard outside the Parliament building provides a striking contrast to the lively streets nearby. A ride up Mount Lycabettus reveals Athens in all directions, while after dark, Psyrri’s illuminated cafés and lively streets create a perfect playground for low-light and night photography.

By the end of the journey, you’ll not only return with a rich collection of images, but also with fresh skills, new perspectives, and the inspiration that comes from photographing one of Europe’s most vibrant and historic capitals.
