Learning to see in black and white is a challenge in a world dominated by colour, but if you can master the basics you can convey really powerful emotions with your photography. Without the distraction of colour to wow your viewer you rely on light, line, texture and expression in a much bigger way than in colour photography. That said an awareness of colour and its effect on the palette of grey, white and black is a one of the keys to success.
During this London in Black and White photography workshop we will look at how to make strong powerful images using contrast and light to help guide the eye through your images as well as shoot a few challenges to get you thinking in shades of grey.

London Photography Workshop - London City in Black and White
Learning to see in black and white is a challenge in a world dominated by colour, but if you can master the basics you can convey really powerful emotions with your photography. Without the distraction of colour to wow your viewer you rely on light, line, texture and expression in a much bigger way than in colour photography. That said an awareness of colour and its effect on the palette of grey, white and black is a one of the keys to success.
During this workshop we will explore some parts of London during the first half of the day, looking at how to make strong powerful images, using contrast and light to help guide the eye through your images as well as shoot a few challenges to get you thinking in shades of grey.
Using images you captured in the morning, we will help you realise their black & white potential. Demonstrations of a wide range of techniques will help you to explore and develop your images in your own way. Also our collaboration with Fotospeed will enable you to print your favourite image of the day after guidance on post processing.
Some of the topics we expect to cover during the developing session in the afternoon will include:
Conversion from Colour to B&W using your editor and popular plug-ins
Making your RAW images appear like your Jpeg’s, especially for Fuji users!
Identifying the key elements of your image and isolating them
Working with exposure and contrast
High and Low Key treatments
Creative use of local adjustments including exposure, contrast and focus
Toning
Vignettes
Choosing a paper to match your image
Adjusting your image to the paper
Printing!
Although this will be day of learning the aim is to have fun while you learn a new technique.
You will need to bring with you a laptop with Lightroom and/or Photoshop. We can also help you if you have CaptureOne, Affinity or Luminar.
Paul and Adrian will meet you at 9.30am at 210 Borough High Street, London SE1 1JX, the workshop will finish at approximately 6.00pm.
This was an excellent day, with a well thought-out blend of hands-on photography and B&W theory. The detailed handbook has enabled me to remember all the techniques taught on the day. My B&W skills have been greatly enhanced and I would recommend this experience to anyone.
Enjoyed the workshop & thought Adrian & Paul were both great. Small niggles: the printing people didn't turn up, the room was very cold & the trip notes were bad - annoying to be told to bring filters when they were not relevant for this workshop
The tuition, organisation and materials provided were excellent. The location for the meeting and processing part of the workshop was good although the room was rather cold.
a hugely stimulating day in the City of London photographing brutalist and modern buildings in B&W and then exploring the additional possibilities within Lightroom. Big shout for Adrian!
As usual with Light and Land a well organised day presented by a very enthusiastic leader in Adrian Beasley. His love of architecture and monochromatic processing is infectious such that you try to emulate his techniques. This day is an excellent add on to Adrian’s Adobe Lightroom presentations. Thoroughly enjoyed my day amongst “the bling” of London’s finance district.
An excellent day in London. Arian took us to the best locations and provided the tips to get the images. Then showed how quick post processing can be to make the image become much more. Now hooked on Black and White.
I think 7 people is too many for x 1 tutor.
Pleasant company, a knowledgeable leader in Adrian, kind weather..what more can you ask for. An enjoyable day out concentrating on Black & White photography with some processing tips thrown in. On this evidence I’d thoroughly recommend both Adrian Beasley as course leader and Light & Land as an organisation.
Excellent day's workshop. Adrian is a very good leader, very knowledgeable about black and white photography and very willing to share his knowledge.
Adrian couldn't have been a better guide and tutor for the day.
A good day all round. Well mixed group of students in terms of experience and variety of images being manipulated. However much you think you know a product, lightroom say, you can always learn more especially with a good teacher like Adrian Beasley. Certainly would recommend this day workshop with Adrian to anyone who wishes to move into Black and white print processing.
Adrian's workshops are always brilliant. I've attended several now, learned a lot, and it's always interesting as well to see what the others in the group are doing.
Adrian is an excellent workshop leader. Well prepared, very responsive to each individual and their needs. He makes the technical accessible, interesting and useful and his 'book of the workshop' is excellent - helps one relax during the dat and also useful afterwards. I enjoyed the day and came away with two high quality prints. Thank you.
Excellent trainer - Clear information given in a friendly informal way. Really enjoyed it - learnt lots of new things to now put into practice. Many thanks
Informative, useful, and the perfect level for me. Helped me take my next photographic steps. Adrian is fantastic.
