Our London photography workshop 'Docklands to Dusk' will take place in November with Astrid McGechan. As the river Thames sneaks its way from the Isle of Dogs towards the City of London, it serves as the focus for our workshop. We will use the day to explore both old and new of London’s iconic skyline, as well as discovering lesser-known views of an area that has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. We start on the Isle of Dogs and finish for sunset near London Bridge. Your guide for the day, Astrid, has photographed extensively in London and she will ensure that the day is filled with wonderful photographic locations.

We will use the day to explore both old and new of London’s iconic skyline, as well as discovering lesser-known views of an area that has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. 'Manhattan' style skyscrapers, medieval churches, birds eye views from a rooftop and the City skyline lit for the evening - this workshop programme is a feast for all styles of photography, with opportunities to shoot water abstracts and reflections, street scenes and architecture, and whatever other opportunities come our way… Astrid will be on hand throughout to offer guidance on composition and techniques, and to help you master new skills with your camera, no matter whether you are a beginner or at a more advanced level. You are sure to go home with a memory card full of new images and some new skills to use in the future.
Transportation will be mainly on foot to allow us to move around freely. We will utilise the DLR (zones 1 & 2) to move between Docklands and the City. Astrid hopes you can join her for this exciting workshop in London.
The workshop starts at 9.30am (near DLR Tower Gateway) and finishes at 4.30pm, around sunset near London Bridge.
A very well organised and enjoyable tour which was adapted to deal with Covid-19 restrictions. Astrid was a skilled workshop leader who took the time to explain how to make the most to the locations. A great day.
I recently attended a one day workshop with Astrid, Docklands to Dusk. I hadn't photographed architecture and reflections much but thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. It was out of my comfort zone to shoot hand held all day but its always good to push the boundaries. Astrid was a great teacher explaining the techniques of shooting hand held and cityscapes. Her work is inspiring and she has an eye for detail and the unusual.
Very enjoyable day, despite the weather. Astrid was a great tutor and there was lots of scope to play with interesting reflections in both glass & water
Excellent tour, well planned to take Covid into consideration, lots of coffee stops and plenty of time to take pictures! Astrid was great and got the right balance between pointing us in the right direction whilst also giving us plenty of time do do our own thing.
Lots to see and do. Astrid was very helpful and generous with her knowledge and suggestions. I learned a lot and began to see images in a very different way. That's what learning is about!
Astrid is as great a leader as the great Clive.?well researched, well organised
Great day - very inspirational. Astrid was lovely - very patient and helpful. And made me look at the London landscape in a very different way. I highly recommend this workshop.
Good locations, enthusiastic leader. However Too much walking to too many locations and not enough time to get the most out of any. Walk to south bank too far for no gain. Would be best just concentrating on the Dockland and city locations.
My first trip with Light and Land was very good. Excellent guidance and tips from Astrid during the day, very helpful and was good to spend time with others to see their insight and viewpoints too. The flexibility in the day’s planned itinerary allowed us to make the most of the weather dependant reflections and also the moody low lighting for visiting the old church. Really pleased with some of the images I took, particularly reflections of the buildings and at the sky garden. It was good to
The itinerary suited me perfectly and met my expectations. We visited places with a mix of old and new architecture and water. Although the wet weather in the morning meant we visited places in a slightly different order it made no difference to the day overall. Astrid is an excellent tutor, pointing out interesting buildings and angles, guiding us to find new compositions along the way. I would recommend the day to anyone interested in photographing old and modern architecture and well as ref
Excellent, a variety of locations and possible scenes. Astrid was able to re-organise the day to accommodate inclement weather early on. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
The itinerary was extremely well thought out, allowing for many photographic opportunities, i.e. reflections, abstracts, buildings, scapes and people. Astrid, our leader was very informative and helpful throughout the day
A great day, even the weather behaved. Excellent tutor (Astrid) who was very active in guiding us towards the interesting and diverse range of subject matter. Would thoroughly recommend. It was lovely being able to get out and about in a different part of London for the day.
The workshop was very good, a small group with an excellent tutor. Astrid took us to great spots through the docklands, but saved the best for last - sunset from the Sky Garden overlooking the Thames and the Shard.
Astrid was very informative, engaging, helpful, resourceful and inspiring. Always there to answer any questions one may have had and also had many suggestions and examples of different photographs encouraging us to try new things. A very enjoyable day.
Well planned organised - Astrid was an engaged and engaging host.
This was my first time on a L&L workshop and I enjoyed the experience very much. The weather conditions were dull and grey but Astrid got us to adapt well to the conditions. Her instructions were clear and her guidance will certainly help me improve on my future photography. We were given enough time at each location and the group got on well together. The important thing that I came away with was to take your time at each viewpoint and how to look for the alternative image. Thanks Astrid.
Well organised prior to event and excellent input during the day. Excellent experience.
Very enjoyable workshop with a friendly and knowledgeable trainer. Pace good and an interesting variety of venues. Good one-to-one tuition. Came away with some nice images. Thank you
Astrid is a great workshop leader, who made sure we got the most out of our day. Her guidance and tips were very helpful and her knowledge of the locations ensured an enjoyable workshop.
The tutor - Astrid - was excellent , very knowledgeable, friendly and informative. She had planned the day well and the preparation was clear. It was very helpful that she had a portfolio of images of the locations on her phone to give us ideas when visiting places.
This was a good workshop. Astrid gave me stuff to think about and she really knows her stuff, and her way around this part of London. Thanks
Well planned, well timed, very good locations. There were photographers with very different skills and strengths, and Astrid catered for us all, while keeping us together as a group. I particularly enjoyed her insights into how she works, and how best to settle into a location to get most from it.
