Our Dorset photography workshop 'Heather & Heathland' will take place in August 2021. The Isle of Purbeck in Dorset is well known for it’s chalky cliffs and dramatic coastal geology, but often overlooked by photographers are the many areas of stunning heathland which can be found all over the Purbeck peninsular. (Purbeck is not actually an Isle). Throughout August, the heathers bloom and transform the landscape into a sea of pink and purple. Sika deer are frequently seen grazing on the heathland, as well as the ponies that roam on the common land. The habitat is home to some rare species of birds and reptiles which are frequently seen if you have a keen eye.
As you will see from the images, there is a variety of terrain, from sand dunes, intimate copses, to open heathland both at the coast and slightly inland. Poole Harbour hugs the Northern edge of the peninsular providing gorgeous backdrops. Having grown up in this small corner of Dorset, your tutor Andy Farrer, is the ideal person to show you some of his favourite and most photogenic parts of his corner of the county.
This workshop will be a small group, with start early, before sunrise to make the most of the soft light. Although not strenuous or steep we will be walking on uneven and sandy footpaths and expect to get in a few steps.
