Isle of Lewis Photography Tour - Isle of Lewis Landscape Photography

It’s a well-known fact that The Outer Hebrides is bursting with photographic opportunity and has been a mecca for landscape photographers for many years. Although the Isle of Lewis is sometimes overshadowed by its adjoined neighbour, Harris, it has plenty to offer with the promise of a diverse, unique environments.

This Isle of Lewis photography tour will aim to show you how diverse and photogenic this part of the Outer Hebrides can be, exploring locations inland looking towards the Harris hills as well as the many glorious beaches that can be found on both the east and west coast of the island.

Lewis is home to Lewisian Gneiss rock, some of which is two thirds the age of the earth, ranking it amongst the oldest in Britain. There will plenty of opportunity to photograph the extraordinary and ancient geology on the beaches that we visit.

The tour will take in locations on the west coast such as the golden sands and turquoise water of Traigh Bhostadh (Bosta Beach) on Great Bernera which also boasts an Iron Age settlement. Further up the coast is Traigh Dhail Mhor (Dalmore) with its impressive white stands and sea stacks. There will also be an opportunity to explore the east coast, including Traigh Ghearadha which also boasts some imposing rock formations and opportunities for classic and abstract coastal imagery.

There are several lighthouses on the island, including one at Rubha Robhais (Butt of Lewis) located at the most northern tip of the island and Tiumpan Head which offers views back across the Minch to the mainland of Scotland. Both provide excellent foreground for photographic endeavours.

Although the coast has enough to keep any photographer busy, there is also plenty to see on the mainland including The Callanish Stones, made of Lewisian Gneiss they are one of the most complete stone circles in Europe. Towards the north of the islands there is the infamous ‘Bridge of Nowhere’ near Tolsta village which looks out over Garry beach. There is also plenty of crofting and fishing villages along the way, as well as many small photogenic lochs dotted around the landscape.

Whether you’re photographing seascapes or landscapes, your tutor, Verity Milligan will be on hand to offer help and tuition, hopefully her enthusiasm and love for this part of Scotland will enable you to discover that there is much to love about Lewis.

We will be staying at the fabulous Uig Lodge on a full board basis and will have the entire lodge to ourselves. There are 3 ensuite doubles, 1 ensuite twin and 4 twins with shared large bathrooms. Rooms will be on a first-come first-served basis. Dinners will be served at the lodge every evening and will be a great time for discussions about the day and good food!
