Our Madagascar photography tour will take place in October 2021 with Andy Farrer. For deserts, canyons, beaches, lemurs, baobabs, rainforests and a nation of smiling faces, then look no further than Madagascar, the tropical island country in the Indian Ocean 250 miles off the coast of East Africa.

Native plants and animals have evolved over the millions of years since Madagascar split from the Indian subcontinent resulting in one of the most bio diverse places on the planet. A remarkable 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. During our tour, the varied and distinctive landscape will unfold and you will be amazed by the different worlds that have evolved in isolation for millennia.

Our adventure around Madagascar will get us to the heart of the very finest landscapes. We have put together a unique itinerary with some truly magnificent locations, which are well off the beaten track. The warmest of welcomes will be awaiting us at each of our chosen hotels and the friendly Malagasy people are great hosts. They have an expression; “Don’t wait to be happy to smile, but smile to be so.” which sums them up perfectly, to me.

Madagascar Photography Tour: An island paradise where Africa meets Asia

Madagascar Photography Tour - Madagascar Landscape & Wildlife Photography

For deserts, canyons, beaches, lemurs, baobabs, rainforests and a nation of smiling faces, then look no further than Madagascar.

The tropical island country of Madagascar is in the Indian Ocean, 250 miles off the coast of East Africa. Native plants and animals have evolved over the millions of years since Madagascar split from the Indian subcontinent resulting in one of the most bio diverse places on the planet. A remarkable 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth.

During our Madagascar photography tour, the varied and distinctive landscape will unfold and you will be amazed by the different worlds that have evolved in isolation for millennia.

Baobabs are some of the most ancient trees on our planet and six out of eight of the species are endemic to Madagascar. Many of these unusual “upside down” trees are in excess of 1000 years old! They are found in the drier areas, but we will also visit and photograph the rainforest at Ranomafana. The moss-covered trees are a stark contrast to the baobabs. The views of the forest from the surrounding area are stunning and make for great photographic opportunities, and once you start to walk inside the forest the sounds of the birds and frogs are quite deafening. Here, as well as in many other locations on our tour, we will hope to see and photograph several species of lemur.

The geology and geomorphology of the landscape as we travel is simply breathtaking. We will photograph the Tsingy Stone Forest, rock formations which are dramatic vertical “needles” or “forests” carved out of the limestone and rising hundreds of meters. The translation from Malagasy of “tsingy” is “the place where one cannot walk barefoot”. This landscape has been created by millions of years of erosion by rain. We will also visit and capture the Isalo National Park, regarded as “Madagascar’s Grand Canyon”. These sandstone ridges, gorges, canyons and stalagmite pinnacles rise up from the surrounding grassy plains and dominate the Jurassic Landscape.

A lot of our drives will have fabulous mountain backdrops and we will visit some of the towns and villages on the way. These will offer further photographic opportunities including a chance to photograph the various traditional handicraft. We will also capture the scenes of land worked by farmers and many rice fields.

We will eventually reach the coast and lagoon area of Ifaty. Here we will enjoy warm tropical seas, visit some mangroves and eat wonderful seafood. There is a “spiny forest” near here and we will visit the best local highlights.

The wildlife in Madagascar is quite remarkable. Although many of the birds are quite elusive during the hotter parts of the day, the dawn chorus is unmissable. There are over 100 species of lemur in Madagascar and our guides are experts at spotting them. Some of the reserves we will visit enable some really good opportunities to photograph large troops at close quarters. The chameleons and reptiles are fantastic to see in their natural habitat.

Our adventure around Madagascar will involve a combination of flights, minibus and 4x4 to get us to the heart of the very finest landscapes.

Andy Farrer, who spent several weeks exploring Madagascar to create this unique trip, will lead this tour. Andy is a professional photographer with over 20 years’ experience behind the camera and has a great following. Based in Swanage, Andy is inspired by the dramatic landscapes of the Isle of Purbeck where he grew up, the constantly changing seasons, skies and love of the outdoors. Andy was named 'UK Landscape Photographer of the Year' in 2015.

This tour is priced for single occupancy. If you would like to share on a twin basis, the price per person is £4799. Please advise on booking if you would like the twin option.
