New Zealand Photography Tour - New Zealand Landscape Photography
Join Ben Osborne and Richard Young on this amazing New Zealand photography tour and travel photography holiday. Aotearoa is a landscape photographer’s dream; the country offers some of the most contrasting and diverse landscape of any small country, from snow-capped mountains to temperate rainforest and wild coastlines. During this 14 day tour of New Zealand, we will photograph some of the country’s best untouched wilderness in numerous national parks, including the world heritage areas of Te Wahipounamu. As well as the endless amazing landscapes, the tour will also focus on some of New Zealand’s best coastal wildlife, from Yellow-Eyed Penguins and Royal Albatross to New Zealand Sea lions.
The tour will start in the city of Christchurch, first heading to Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain, where we will stay for two nights (at The Hermitage Hotel in Mount Cook village – not the mountain itself!). Mt Cook, like a number of other locations that we will visit during the tour, has amazing clear skies with no light pollution, offering the chance to photograph the Milky Way.
We then head south to Otago, stopping on the way to photograph the famous Moeraki Boulders. We then spend two nights at Larnach Castle, one of the most beautiful and unusual places to stay on South Island. From here we will photograph the abundant local wildlife which includes New Zealand sea lions and fur seals, as well as a host of rare bird species, such as the Yellow-eyed penguin, Northern Royal albatross and various petrels.
Having experienced mountains and then coast, we now mix the two as we travel down to Fiordland, spending a night at Lake Te Anau before heading out on an overnight cruise in beautiful Doubtful Sound. This is far more remote and scenic than the much better known Milford Sound. The area is rightly famous for its spectacular mountains, forests and waterfalls. If we are lucky, there is the chance of an encounter with the resident dolphins.
Our journey then takes us up the West Coast through some of New Zealand’s most untouched wilderness. Our time here will be spent walking through superb rainforest foliage; photographing beautiful ferns; forest giants; serene lakes; stunning beaches; glaciers and many more mountains.
Spending a couple of nights in Wanaka gives us the option of an off-road adventure to photograph some of the more remote mountain views at sunset and there will be a visit to the iconic Wanaka tree. We’ll also spend two nights in Fox, where we’ll visit Lake Mathieson for classic dawn views of Mount Cook asnd where there be also be the option of a glacier flight.
For those more interested in wildlife we’ll be heading on a jet-boat trip to photograph the beautiful White Herons and Royal Spoonbills that nest in the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve.
Continuing north we will reach Punakaiki and the famous Pancake Rocks rock formations. We will have two nights here to explore this wild coastline and venture into the “lost world” wilderness before heading back through the Southern Alps. The last leg of our journey takes us over Arthur’s Pass before a final stop at Castle Hill to visit the spectacular boulder formations. The tour ends on our arrival in Christchurch where we connect with international flights.
Throughout this tour we’ll not only visit some of the most remote and beautiful landscapes that New Zealand has to offer but we’ll also do our utmost to be on location when the light is at its best. Your photographic guides on this journey are the perfect combination of knowledge and experience to ensure you get the most out of this tour.
