North Devon Coast in Black and White, Capture to Print Tour

This North Devon photography tour will take place in November and is aimed at photographers who want to explore Black and White photography in this beautiful part of the UK. The North Devon coast is only 40 miles as the crow flies but anyone who has walked this section of the South West Coast Path will know that it is home to towering cliffs, huge beaches and tiny hidden coves.

In the northern section, we start with Valley of Rocks, where Exmoor meets the sea in a dramatic, dry valley.  The coast here is dotted with coves beneath the cliffs leading eventually to the small resort town of Ilfracombe with its fishing harbour and controversial Damien Hirst statue.  Further west we find the beautiful small Lee Bay and Bull Point lighthouse.  As we head to the first of the big sandy beaches, we pass Morte Point, with its unusual rock structures and fabulous views out towards Lundy Island.  Woolacombe Beach is a long sandy beach several miles in length, ending at Putsborough and Baggy Point.

We will be based at the Saunton Sands hotel, a 1930’s 4* Art Deco gem perched above Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows. Our North Devon photography tour will be led by Adrian Beasley and will provide opportunities and tuition in black & white photography, editing and printing.

North Devon Photography Tour - North Devon Coast Landscape Photography

This North Devon photography tour is aimed at photographers who want to explore Black & White photography in this beautiful part of the UK.

This headland separates Putsborough from one of the UK’s best surfing beaches, Croyde Bay. This beach is compact and has a rocky foreshore at either end, ideal for macro and long exposure.

Finally, rounding the headland we reach the spectacular 3 mile long Saunton Sands. Saunton is backed by a dune system called Braunton Burrows, the largest in the UK and also the first UNESCO biosphere reserve in the UK. At this point we reach the estuary of the Taw and Torridge Rivers and the coast heads inland to Barnstaple. Across the river and continuing west, we meet Instow, a beautiful, simple beach village with sandy beach and small dune system. Across the Torridge river we find Bideford and Appledore, leading back to the sea at Westward Ho! with its huge pebble ridge, sea-pool and bouldery foreshore. Heading further west, you can drop steeply down to the sea at Peppercombe and Bucks Mills before reaching the iconic Clovelly. Here, the steep, cobbled street leads down to the small harbour.

Further west we find Mouthmill Beach with its collapsed arch, Blackchurch Rock. We are in Hartland, nearing the western most end of the North Devon coast. Here we have the most rugged coastline which exposes dramatic geological folds. Hartland Point and Hartland Quay offer great views and an opportunity to reach the sea. The last North Devon beach is Welcome Mouth and is no less dramatic, with fingers of rock stretching into the sea and a large sandy section at low tide.

We will be based at the Saunton Sands hotel, a 1930’s 4* Art Deco gem perched above Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows. This tour is aimed at photographers who want to explore Black & White photography in this beautiful part of the UK and will provide opportunities and tuition in photography, editing and printing. I plan to use the final day for editing and printing and two full days out and about, but the weather may alter our plans. There are opportunities for long exposure, panoramas, ICM, macro, telephoto and even Infrared. You could easily bring everything you own, but please don’t!

Many locations require a good level of fitness and good balance to reach and explore the locations. Wet rocks are a particular hazard in winter and most beaches have rivers running through them adding an extra hazard even in dry conditions. Please ask before booking if you are not sure if this tour would suit you.

You will need to bring a computer and editing software for the edit and print day. If you don’t have access to a laptop, then you could bring a desktop or even an iPad with a fully featured mobile editor such as Lightroom. I have a spare Mac and PC laptop which can be loaned on a first-come first-served basis.

We will meet on Sunday 20th November at 16:00 in the bar at Saunton Sands hotel (EX33 1LQ). The workshop will finish on Wednesday 23rd at 16:00.

A GOOD WORKSHOP, WELL ORGANISED AND TUTORED

Derek Murrells - 8th Feb, 2020

A well thought out & well balanced workshop. Excellent tour leader in Adrian Beasley, very knowledgeable of locations, photographic technique & post processing.

John Fontana - 6th Feb, 2020

An excellent leader balancing photography in the field with knowledgeable technical instruction indoors. He was never intrusive but always about for help. He did not take a camera himself, devoting his time entirely to the group, working on with us after the evening meal. The accommodation was excellent though restaurant prices there meant we ate out locally, but were transported there. We were taken to several photo venues in the area. If there were any criticism at all, it might be that perhap

Adrian is a really great guy, explained the area, helped with long exposure photography, gave advice on photography and printing. Came home with two excellent prints thanks to Adrian’s expertise. Accommodation superb, food excellent.

Excellent tour led by Adrian Beasley

Mr Ian Bosworth - 18th Nov, 2021

Have just attended a north Devon Monochrome workshop. Adrian our tutor was excellent, full of useful information and his local knowledge gave us some excellent opportunities for outstanding photography. The weather gods played ball too. Taunton Sands Hotel was very good. All in all a very enjoyable experience and the standard of photography from all parties was of a high standard

Mr Peter Butler - 18th Nov, 2021

This as a great worship, brilliant locations and a excellent tutor.

Mr Anthony Mancell - 26th Nov, 2021

Due to personal reasons, I only completed one day of the tour, the organisation, hotel and tutoring by Adrian Beasley was excellent.

Ms Paula Whitehouse - 23rd Nov, 2021

Adrian is a brilliant tutor. He spent lots of time with each of the delegates explaining compositions, best settings for the image etc. The last day we spent printing our photos. I could go on and on...had a great time. The group got on really well. Can't wait to book another workshop.

Mrs Eleanor Cooper - 22nd Nov, 2021

Varied, interesting locations and and Adrian is a very patient and informative leader. The printing element of the course was very instructive with some super prints produced.
