Romania is one of Paul Sanders' favourite locations, especially Transylvania. Over the last 30 years, Romania has developed into one of the most visually and culturally wonderful places to visit. The 2020 Light and Land Romania photography tour has been extended by a couple of days to allow us extra time to visit the locations with a wealth of photographic experiences on offer.

The landscape in Romania is spectacular and unlike any other country you will visit. Rural isolated farms, haystacks, lakes, rivers, mountains and rolling hills give the most incredible back drop. Add to this an abundance of wild flowers and you can start to see that this is a tour with so much variety you won’t fail to be inspired. Did we mention misty mornings? No? Our last accommodation at Raven’s Nest, where we spend three nights, is a little guest house tucked away on top of a small mountain, accessible by 4x4, the area is one of Paul's favourites anywhere in the world and the mornings are truly special as mist can - given the right conditions - fill the valleys giving rise to images of a truly ethereal quality.

Romania Photography Tour - Romania Landscape Photography

Romania is one of Paul Sanders' favourite locations, especially Transylvania. Over the last 30 years, Romania has developed into one of the most visually and culturally wonderful places to visit. The 2020 Light and Land photography tour has been extended by a couple of days to allow us extra time to visit the locations with a wealth of photographic experiences on offer.

Our tour will start in the charming medieval town of Sibiu. One of the major fortified towns in Transylvania, it has narrow streets, squares and defensive towers surrounding it and the houses all have the “sleeping eye” roof windows.

Paul says. "If you engage with the people and culture your images are stronger because of the connection, you have an enhanced experience. We have put together some fascinating experiences with real people - I personally hate stage managed photo ops on tours. Here we will tour a glass factory where the craftsmen blow wine glasses in sweltering heat, stripped down to their shorts and vests. We will spend time with a family of Romany coppersmiths and learn about their gypsy heritage and lifestyle.

Small scale farming is very prevalent in Romania so we will travel in to the hills to spend time with shepherds working the flocks of sheep and goats. Also as the sun come up, we will see the collection of the cattle in the village of Viscri as they head up to pasture after milking".

Vampires are synonymous with Romania, although Daniel our guide does not enjoy the link with as much relish as some tour guides. Bran Castle is linked to Bram Stoker and his famous novel.  High on the side of a mountain, Bran makes for a stunning image.

Thankfully, Romaina made keeping bears illegal a few years ago. Most garages, circuses and some shops had a bear kept in appalling conditions. The Bear Sanctuary has been working very hard to help the abused bears of Romania have a better life and we will spend some time exploring the sanctuary with one of the conservationists. Hopefully the bears will not be too shy. The sanctuary is not a zoo and visits are limited to aid the well being of the bears.

I hope we have whetted your appetite a little to ask a few questions about Romania.

Paul is looking forward to sharing this wonderful country with you. This tour is limited to 6 places.

  • Rural guesthouses

We chose to stay in rural guesthouses as they offer a more traditional experience than large hotels and they are closer to where the good photo opportunities are. The rooms are comfortable and clean and have en-suite bathroom. The difference between a rural guesthouse and a hotel is that at a rural guesthouse usually there is no 24h reception, meals are served as a set menu (not a a la carte), there is no bar, in some places internet works only in the dining area, towels are not changed daily or the room is not done daily, there is no AC (not needed since they are in mountainous areas), no elevators. By staying in those places you will feel like you are in Romania, not in any standard hotel in the world .

The trip was great fun with some great photography. Lots of good pointers from Paul. The locations were well selected and time spent at each was about right. In addition the guest houses were a good standard with good food. Daniel, our guide, provided interesting background information on Romanian history and culture. Overall the balance of cultural interest and photography was right. A great tour. As before my only real problem with these tours is the treatment of couples. This is administration and in no way reflects on the tour leaders or guides.

Lovely trip with a relaxed pace. Nice range of locations and subject matter.

Krystyna - 27th Jun, 2019

Paul was a wonderful tutor and paced the trip brilliantly. His and Daniel’s choice of locations was perfect and the guest houses were warm, clean and comfortable. My only gripe is not with the tour itself but that Light and Land treat couples so unfairly- yes we had a room each to make a point and much to everyone ‘s amusement but surely it would have been preferable to give us a couples discount?

For tours outside of the UK, we will select a recommended flight which will depart from a London airport to the destination. In most cases (unless stated otherwise), the tour leaders will greet you at the destination airport from this flight and return you to the airport at the end of the tour.

Please DO NOT book your flights until advised to do so by the office. Tours have to become viable before we select the recommended flight.

Once a tour has enough bookings to make it viable, you will receive an email to alert you that the recommended flights have been uploaded to your client area on the website.

You are welcome to make alternative travel arrangements. If doing so, please ensure you are at the destination airport for the arrival time of the recommended flight to ensure you can take the transfer to the hotel. Alternatively you can arrange your own transfers and meet the group at the hotel on the first night.
