This day is now fully booked but the following day has availability, please click here.

A fully tutored hide day capturing one of the most colourful and iconic British birds- the Kingfisher.

From a custom built hide in Somerset we will be sat comfortably looking out across the surface of the water in front of us at eye level. This provides a perfect view to photograph the Kingfisher on a perch, perhaps with a small fish after a successful hunt as well as capture the kingfisher diving into the water and flying back up through the surface with an explosion of water drops.

The kingfisher will be at a very close distance, just a few metres away from us and will often show up more than a dozen times in a session.

The Kingfisher Photography Workshop

A fully tutored hide day capturing one of the most colourful and iconic British birds- the Kingfisher.

From a custom built hide in Somerset we will be sat comfortably looking out across the surface of the water in front of us at eye level. This provides a perfect view to photograph the Kingfisher on a perch, perhaps with a small fish after a successful hunt as well as capture the kingfisher diving into the water and flying back up through the surface with an explosion of water drops.

The kingfisher will be at a very close distance, just a few metres away from us and will often show up more than a dozen times in a session.

This workshop would be ideal for beginners as well as advanced photographers. To get the best out of the session you will need lenses from 200mm on a full frame camera through to 400mm and beyond if you have them available. 200mm plus is ideal for capturing a dive and closer to 400mm to capture the kingfisher on a perch. A camera with the fastest frame rate you have access to will help capture the diving images.

The workshop will begin shortly after sunrise at a prearranged meeting point where we will drive to the hide. We will need to remain relatively quiet when the kingfisher is in position but will have time normally between visits to discuss and review images and try different techniques and settings.

As with all nature however, whilst sightings are very likely, can never be fully guaranteed. The hide provides room for a maximum of two participants plus a leader to retain a safe distance. There is a small heater if needed and tea and coffee can be provided. There is a toilet on site. Each participant will need to bring warm layers and ideally will have an Arca Swiss plate on their camera or lens in order to use the gimbal heads provided. Your own tripod head with plate can be used also so please bring these. A tripod will not be necessary. The hide is remote but has easy access with a very short walk from where we will park.
