A warm welcome to Benedict Brain

10th April 2018

We are delighted to welcome Benedict Brain to Light and Land.

Benedict (known as Ben!) is a UK based photographer, journalist and artist. He graduated with a degree in photography from the Derby School of Art in 1991 (now University of Derby), where he was tutored and inspired by photographers John Blakemore and Olivier Richon, amongst others. He is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and also sits on the society’s Distinctions Advisory Panel.

Like many photographers, Ben was first enchanted by the magic of photography in a traditional darkroom as a child. Later, at Derby, Ben became interested in notions of metaphor and narrative in the photograph; ideas that have underpinned and informed his personal practice ever since. Whether faced with an epic landscape at the golden hour, battling the elements in the mountains, strolling through suburban sprawl or quietly working in his studio, Ben is always striving to add layers of meaning to his images.

Ben practised as a commercial photographer and photography workshop leader in Miami, USA for over a decade. Since relocating back to the UK in 2005 he has worked as an award-winning journalist for the photographic press.  He is currently editor of one of Britain’s best-selling consumer photography magazines, Digital Camera Magazine. As a journalist Ben has met and interviewed some of the world’s greatest photographers and written on a wide range of photography related topics, presented technique videos, written in-depth features, curated and edited best-in-class content for a range of titles including; Amateur Photographer, PhotoPlus, NPhoto, Professional Photography and Practical Photoshop.

Ben is regularly asked to judge many prestigious photo competitions such as the International Garden Photographer of the Year and the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year and is a regular speaker at shows including The Adventure Travel Show and The Photography Show.

Ben has recently founded Brain’s Foto Guides Ltd. with a mission to create beautifully designed and crafted photography location maps and guides.
