Light & Land
Autumnal Adventure in Spectacular Slovenia By Neil Davidson
23rd November 2024
Going on this trip was to allay some unfinished business for me since 2016. I’d attended a wedding at Bled Castle and, though the ceremony it self was fantastic and one of the best I’ve attended looking at the spectacular scenery, the mountains, Lake Bled, there flections in the water I found myself grinding my teeth in frustration that I couldn’t get out and photograph anything. Well not without wedding guests getting in the way!
So, when I saw this trip on the L&L website, particularly as Astrid McGechan, who I’d been with before, was one of the leaders I spent about a milli second thinking it over before registering.
Day 1 Monday 21st October
After meeting everyone at the airport and driving to the hotel Lovec in Bled we all checked in and then embarked on the 10-minute walk from the hotel to the lakeside for our first evening shoot. The setting sun afforded some great back-lit views of the lake and the mountains.
Day 2 Tuesday 22nd October
Our first sunrise session on the west of the lake. This is where the “classic” shots of the Church are taken so we were not the only photographers there. After about 40 minutes of waiting a dim outline appeared and as the sunrose the church appeared as if someone was raising a curtain. We also became aware of the fantastic autumn colours of the trees on the lake edge. A magical time. The rest of the day consisted of visiting Lake Bohinj for mist, mountain and reflection shots. The waterfall at Grmecica, quite spectacular, and finally sunset at Lake Bled.
Day 3 Wednesday 23rd October
Our first visit of the day was to Mostnica Gorge which afforded us forest and waterfall opportunities and then we went onto The Church of St. Primusand Pelican in the hills near Jamnik village. By now the weather had turned cloudy but the views of the mountains with the autumn forests receding into the distance were still impressive.
Day 4 Thursday 24th October
Three of us made it for another Lakeside dawn session. This time we located to the southern shore. The weather didn’t look too promising with low cloud blocking the sunrise. However, there was a period of about 20 minutes of blue light which contrasted well with the church that was still floodlit. Added to that, some mist in the mountains behind the church made for some impressive images. After breakfast we were driven high into the Mountains to the Radnova Valley. This had a very alpine feel with lots of small huts in the fields, giving some good foreground opportuni ties for photos of the misty mountains behind. Finally, to end the day, we visited and photographed the Russian Orthodox Chapel on the Vršic Pass. This had been built by Russian Prisoners of War during World War One and serves as both a memorial and symbolic link between Russia and Slovenia.
Day 5 Friday 25th October
On our last day were turned to Lake Bohinj for some photographs of the church and lake at dawn and then, after some breakfast and packing we visited Bled castle for some final few shots before heading to the airport. All in all, even though the weather could have been kinder, it was a great trip with lots of scenic variety. A very special thanks to our leaders Astrid McGechan and Verity Milligan for their hard work in making the trip a success. The constant input they gave regarding composition suggestions and technical assistance really made a great difference.
