Our Eryri (Snowdonia) photography workshop 'Ancient Woodland and Lakes' will take place in April 2026 with Brad Carr.

Eryri boasts some truly majestic and utterly beautiful areas which are well-documented online on social media platforms and in books and magazines. But it is in the smaller and lesser-known corners of the national park that the magic and mystery of this ancient landscape is best uncovered. It is in these untrodden corners, that the deeper stories of Mother Nature’s infinite beauty become even more enchanting and mysterious, and it is to some of these wilder parts of the landscape that Brad will be guiding you on this workshop.

During this workshop, the focus will be on adopting a storytelling approach to photography. We will be looking at what makes the landscape unique to you. There will, therefore, be almost as much focus on conversation as there will be on creating photographs. Brad will encourage plenty of reflection. Why do you create? What events have led you here to the point where you’re standing outdoors in the landscape creating photographs? Everybody has a story to tell, and Brad recognises that it is important to try to tell it through our photographs to make deeper and more meaningful art.

Some of the further themes and topics that will be covered during this workshop will be:

  • Learning how to ‘see’ compositions within the landscape
  • Getting intimate with your location; simplifying the landscape; finding smaller scenes within the whole
  • Communicating something ‘more’ and applying a storytelling approach to photography
  • Creating a series of photographs to tell a deeper story of a place
  • Adopting mindful approach to creativity and connecting with subjects first
  • Slowing down and seeing how photographs then begin to appear
  • Finding personal meaning in our photographs and conveying & expressing emotions
  • Understanding light & utilising it for powerful and compelling photographs

We will be meeting at 5.30am just outside of the picturesque village of Beddgelert for sunrise beside a spectacular lake that provides tremendous views of two of the national park's stunning mountain ranges. We’ll then move on to one or two (depending on how the day plays out) further woodland locations nearby, which will require a short drive and, perhaps, a parking charge for non-National Trust members. Both locations involve short, uphill walks. The workshop will finish at around 1:30pm.
