Our Fairytale Durham photography workshop will take place in November. Join Peter and follow in the footsteps of C.S. Lewis in the city that inspired the Chronicles of Narnia.
Durham is a beautiful medieval Cathedral city built on an island in the River Wear. Its enchanting bridges and alleyways have inspired writers for centuries. And while the towering Cathedral itself is best known as Hogwarts school in the Harry Potter film franchise, its period gas lamps and winding lanes will seem familiar to avid readers of C.S. Lewis’ Narnia stories.

Fairytale Durham Photography Workshop - Durham Street and Landscape Photography
For this one-day workshop, best timed to coincide with autumn, we’ll focus on the often otherworldly stillness Durham is known for by its residents. At this time of year, the city comes alive with colour, adding to the storybook atmosphere. We’ll begin in the morning by capturing the hive of activity in the main marketplace and the indoor market, learning to pick out details in busy scenes for clean compositions. This is the theme of the day, and we’ll carry that through to the idyllic landscapes we’ll capture down on the riverbanks; surely one of Durham’s best features. Here we’ll focus on using reflections and natural frames to show off the city in unusual ways.

Next, we’ll head to the charming leafy neighbourhood of Pimlico for stunning elevated views of the Cathedral bathed in light, and seek out the “Narnia cottage” for fairytale frames of the picture-perfect houses along South Street.
Finally, we’ll capture the sunset and dusk atmosphere around the Cathedral Close and Durham Castle, using leading lines and pools of light for compelling visual storytelling. As Peter’s local city, his familiarity with Durham will help you capture not only the most well-known views, but also the city's many hidden features.
