Small in area but mighty in stature, Madeira occupies only 280 square miles with a coastal circumference of 90 miles, but its central volcanic peaks reach almost 2000m. Colonised by Portuguese settlers from the early 15th Century, the island archipelago is the westernmost outpost of Europe. In fact being closer to Africa than Europe, Madeira enjoys mild year-round temperatures regulated by the Gulf Stream and Canary Current.
Yet, despite its small size, the climate across the island varies substantially. The dry and arid south east around the capital Funchal stands in contrast to the north characterised by rainforest and soaring cloudbanks. Within an hour, one can travel from the sunshine and warmth of a southern beach and be above the clouds in a cool, lush subtropical rain forest. As a consequence, the photographic opportunities in this island paradise are many and varied.

Madeira Photography Tour - Island of Eternal Spring
We aim to visit several dramatic coastal viewpoints in the north where forested cliffs plunge into the Atlantic, decorated with the silver ribbons of waterfalls. One could almost be surveying a lost Jurassic world. A number of dramatic sea stacks photographed from the beach or higher viewpoints provide excellent subjects. Inland, we will explore the truly wonderful Fanal Forest, where ancient, twisted trees adopt almost balletic poses as the mist rolls round the high plateau. This area forms part of a prehistoric laurissilva forest and is unsurprisingly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Venturing higher, we will come to the summits of the tallest peaks and look down on cloud inversions at dawn and dusk, offering us magnificent wide vistas, as well as detailed views of the shapes and forms of the ridgelines as they emerge and recede from their white cloaks.
There may be the opportunity to explore one of the many ‘levada’ trails across the island. Paths run alongside these manmade aqueducts, cut into the mountains from the 16th century to transport fresh water from the northwest to the dryer agricultural and inhabited regions in the South. Closer to civilization, we aim to visit one of the superbly presented gardens in Funchal, stocked with diverse tropical flora for which Madeira is rightly famous. Close up macro work, multiple exposures and other creative techniques can be explored as we stroll through the beautifully manicured terraces.

The size of the island means that most locations are reachable in an hour or less which allows us to be reactive to the weather conditions, which can change rapidly. In November, sunrise and sunset times are at reasonable hours, meaning that we shall be able to enjoy dawn shoots as well as evenings together at our hotel or at one of the excellent local restaurants after sunset photography. There will be plenty of time for image reviews and processing sessions to allow you to get the best out of your photographs and return with a portfolio worthy collection. While most of the locations we visit are easily accessible, there are one or two that will require a reasonable level of fitness, with walks of up to 45 minutes each way and elevation gains of 200-300m. The mountain trails are paved but you should be able to carry your gear comfortably over those distances at a leisurely pace.
Tom and Ed have extensively explored Madeira in order to provide you with a fabulous and varied introduction to the photographic delights of this magical island. As experienced photographers and good-humoured guides, they will be keen to encourage the development of your photographic vision and help you return with images of which to be proud.
