Our Timeless Heart of France photography tour to the Lot and the Dordogne will take place in May 2027 and will be led by Charlie Waite and Astrid McGechan.
The Dordogne and the Lot are magical regions of France, famed for truffles, greengages, walnuts and superb local cuisine, yet still home to hidden, little-visited enchanting places that will provide us with glorious photography. This is a landscape of quiet richness rather than obvious spectacle, where winding rivers, golden stone villages, orchards, woodland, châteaux and pastoral valleys come together in a way that feels timeless.
The upper reaches of the Dordogne River wind westward through a landscape of striking contrasts. At times the river moves through broad valleys lined with tobacco, walnut and corn plantations; elsewhere it flows deep and silent beneath towering limestone cliffs. Along its banks are jewel-like villages, tiny riverside vegetable plots — potagers — and old houses that seem almost to dip their toes into the water.

The Heart of Timeless France - The Lot & Dordogne Photography Tour
High above, the stark causses plateaux rise a thousand feet into vast skies, dotted with grazing sheep and goats whose milk becomes the delicious Cabécou cheese. Beneath them, soft limestone conceals prehistoric caves, underground rivers and dramatic gorges that drop towards secluded hamlets and wooded valleys. In spring, the whole region comes vividly to life: orchards blossom, wildflowers brighten the fields, poppies may appear along the roadside, and fresh green leaves bring softness and energy to the landscape.
For the first part of our journey, we will be based near Saint-Jean-Lespinasse, exploring some of the area’s finest stretches. We will photograph atmospheric villages, riverside views, tree-lined lanes, walnut groves and the surrounding pastoral landscapes. We will visit the enchanting hilltop village of Loubressac, and Carennac, where chestnut trees shade a 10th-century priory and a joyful tumble of old houses leads down to the riverbank. These locations, together with the surrounding countryside, offer a wealth of photographic opportunities, from intimate details and village architecture to broader views of the Lot landscape.
Later during our tour, we will be based in Souillac, whose Romanesque Abbaye Sainte-Marie lies at the heart of the town. From here, we will be perfectly placed to explore further into the Dordogne, including historic towns, dramatic viewpoints, châteaux, riverside villages and the distinctive limestone architecture for which the region is so loved. Sarlat and its surroundings offer particularly rich material, with narrow streets, warm stone, architectural detail and the chance to respond to changing light throughout the day.
Throughout the tour, Charlie and Astrid will encourage you to look beyond the obvious view and to build stronger, more personal images. There will be guidance on composition, visual rhythm, working with light, simplifying complex scenes, noticing small details, and making the most of whatever the weather and season bring. As always with Light & Land, we will remain flexible, allowing time for careful observation and making the most of a little “LLL” — Light & Land Luck — when the right light appears.
Join Charlie and Astrid in a land of winding rivers, golden stone villages, flowering meadows and quiet landscapes made for the camera.
