Our Torridon Photography Tour will take place in March and will be led by Niall Benvie.
In the north west of Scotland, on the mainland opposite the Isle of Skye, lies another mountainous realm: Torridon. Here, the mountains are built of sandstone rather than gabbro. The summits are smooth, rather than shattered, and meet the sky with a glistening cap of quartzite. Burns descend from them like streams of perspiration, coursing through relict pine forests to be absorbed by boggy pools of Sphagnum moss.
While it’s not necessary to climb to gain a good vantage point, doing so can bring its own rewards. The summits conjure with clouds rushing in from the Atlantic to produce squalls, then drizzle, then brilliant sunshine, then hail – all within an hour. On other days, it is utterly still and the dark lochs reflect the sombre mountains around them. It’s as if the whole landscape is holding its breath: a time to be quiet ourselves and get a sense of the endurance of life here.
In the heart of Torridon is the Beinn Eighe massif, the UK’s first National Nature Reserve, founded in 1951 in recognition of its internationally important flora–principally of mosses, lichens and liverworts. It is also a redoubt of the once vast Scots pine forest that covered much of the Scottish Highlands for thousands of years but which has been reduced to a few scraps and remnants. At Beinn Eighe, we can see the work being done to re-establish a corridor of woodland from the pine-clad slopes above Loch Maree, down the length of Glen Torridon, to join with other fragments of old forest around Shieldaig.
Throughout the tour, we will explore Torridon’s many photographic possibilities: mountain ridges reflected in dark lochs, old pine forests, rocky shorelines, quiet harbours, waterfalls, winding roads and passes, and the intimate details of rock, moss, water and woodland. Depending on conditions, we may also visit the coast around Shieldaig and Lower Diabeg, the shores of Loch Maree, the road over the Bealach na Bà, and other places where mountain, sea and forest meet.
Torridon is a place for photographers who enjoy both the grand view and the patient, observant study. There may be opportunities to work with changing weather, stillness and reflection, red deer in Glen Torridon, or simple details such as a weathered boat, wet stone, pine bark or a pool of sphagnum — images that express not just the spectacle of the landscape, but its atmosphere, resilience and deep sense of place.
