Our Cultural Crossroads - Balkans Photography Tour will take place in October 2027 and will be led by Mehmet Ozbalci.
This journey through the Balkans and along the Adriatic coast traces a richly layered corner of Europe where cultures meet, histories overlap and daily life unfolds with remarkable visual character. Travelling across Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia, the tour offers not simply a series of locations, but a gradual immersion into a region shaped by faiths, empires and traditions - a place where east and west quietly coexist.
We begin in Sarajevo, a city long known as a meeting point of civilisations, blending influences from its diverse history and the unique mix of Eastern and Western civilisations. Minarets, churches and synagogues stand within moments of each other, while its bazaars, architecture, streets and people document traces from the Bosnian war, and carry both resilience and warmth. From there, the journey reveals towns where rivers, stone and human presence combine to create powerful photographic stories - architecture marked by time, bridges symbolic of continuity, and everyday life unfolding against a backdrop of layered history. We visit Mostar, the fortified city of Kotor in Montenegro, and photograph scenic church islands on the Adriatic Sea.
Along the coast, the mood shifts. Venetian influence lingers in fortified coastal settlements and tranquil harbours, where light moves gently across water and stone. Inland, mountains rise as dramatically as the Swiss Alps above traditional villages and fertile valleys, offering a quieter rhythm and opportunities to photograph rural life, craftsmanship and enduring traditions. Albania is Europe’s off the beaten track destination, and harbours diverse photographic opportunities.
Further east, in Kosovo and North Macedonia, Ottoman heritage, Orthodox culture and modern identity blend in colourful capitals and intimate historic towns. White-walled houses cascade down hillsides, lakes reflect centuries-old churches, and lively squares provide endlessly changing street scenes. Each country reveals its own personality while still belonging to a shared cultural thread.
Throughout the tour, Mehmet Ozbalci will guide you not only to rewarding photographic locations but also toward understanding the human and historical context behind them. The aim is not to rush from viewpoint to viewpoint, but to observe, respond and build meaningful photographs - allowing the atmosphere of the Balkans to shape both your vision and experience.
