Our Impressions of London Photography Workshop will take place in December and will be led by Bill Ward.

The South Bank of the Thames is an extraordinary place to spend time with a camera. Juxtaposition is everywhere. High tech modernity rubs shoulders with history and old school industrialisation. There’s the Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and The Globe Theatre. All humanity is here: a plethora of buskers, tourists, not to mention Londoners, going about their everyday lives. With purpose. And at some speed. There’s a buzz and busy-ness everywhere… places to be… the beating heart of central London…

And yet there’s quiet here too. Wide open space, and time for reflection. The Tate Modern garden, and the silver birches that surround it. The glorious views both across and along the Thames. Cafes, street and pavement art, and artists… even a surprise beach at low tide…

The photographic possibilities are pretty much exponential.

Our workshop will concentrate on developing our skills in what are often referred to as “Creative Photography” techniques, in particular Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and In Camera Multiple Exposures, as well as Abstract. Your guide for the day, Bill, has been a leading practitioner of these for well over a decade, and is a regular writer/contributor for the worldwide ICM Photography Magazine. He’s particularly evangelical about their ability to get right under the skin of a place, a time, a feeling, and reveal their very essence.

An actor by training, Bill is well versed in the creative process, the benefits of working with an open mind, the joy of improvising and going with what you’re given.  He’s particularly interested in working on the fly: staying in the moment, seeing what comes up on the back of the camera, and using it as a springboard for an unknown destination.

Bill spent 20 years living in London, much of it with a camera in his hand, and revisits it frequently. He is thoroughly looking forward to spending some quality time back in the thick of it…

The workshop, which will run from 10am to 4:30pm, is limited to 6 participants.
