Our Cornwall photography tour 'The Wild West' will take place in February 2026 with Bill Ward. The area of West Penwith lies at the very far western tip of Cornwall. The UK’s very own “Wild West”, it’s a magical place: empty hills and moors give way to steep headlands, which in turn drop away to stunning white sand beaches.
Based on the dramatic headland of Cape Cornwall, a few bays round the corner from Lands End, this part of Cornwall is essentially an island, with water on 3 sides: on the more westerly exposed beaches, the swell rolls in from the Atlantic, all the way from the east coast of Newfoundland. There is weather here - big time - and when all the elements line up, it’s a life affirming dose of pure visceral energy. Storms, surf, wind, you name it - when it lands, it lands.
The southern side has a noticeably different character: there is shelter here, secluded smugglers’ coves, fishing villages and rocky inlets - palm trees rub shoulders with tropical plants aplenty - and a hugely atmospheric dampness can linger in the air.

Far West Cornwall Photography Tour - A Magical Land of Myth and Legend
All along the coast, and inland too, there are reminders of the area’s surprisingly industrial past - this was the centre of the country’s long since departed tin mining industry. At its zenith in the mid 19th century, there were over 600 steam engines here, pumping out the mines that led out under the seabed, and the area was the copper and tin mining capital of the world. Nowadays, the shells of the mines hang in the morning mist, the echoes of the engines long gone.
There is neolithic and bronze age history here too: West Penwith has the highest concentration of stone circles anywhere in the UK, and potentially all of western Europe - their energy remains palpable and specific.
Not only is there history here, there is deep legend too. While the northwest coast carries much of the Legend of King Arthur and his wizard Merlin, the Far West is the land of mermaids and sea creatures, giants and underwater kingdoms. The Mermaid of Zennor, and the lost land of Lyonesse, the giants Cormoron and Blunderbore who lived around St Michael’s Mount, even the Piskies, Buccas and Knockers that are said to inhabit these parts… it’s a kingdom of possibility, imagination and the humble but formidably tasty Cornish pasty.

Whilst it’s the extraordinary soulfulness and wildness of the area that draws you back time and time again, it’s the beaches that consistently delight and amaze on the photographic front… pure white sand, turquoise seas, windswept dunes and out of season, space, time and emptiness.
This is grade A seascape territory. Your tutor for this tour, Bill Ward, has been coming here over 50 years, initially with his bucket and spade (a full-on 14-hour car journey from his home in Newcastle in the 1970’s), 30 years with a surfboard, and the last 20 years with his camera, exploring, walking, investigating, soaking it all up, and marvelling at the wonder of it all.
In addition to Seascapes, Bill is also one of the UK’s leading Creative Photographers (Intentional Camera Movement/Multiple Exposures), so there will also be plenty of opportunities to experiment with this genre for those who are interested.
