Our Berlin photography tour in Black & White will take place in March 2026 and will be led by Adrian Beasley.
Adrian says that when he thinks of a city in Black & White, he thinks of Berlin. Perhaps it was those great Black & White spy films with Michael Caine, but for some reason Berlin feels like a Black & White destination for him.
Home to more galleries than any other city in Europe and more bridges than Venice, Berlin is a very popular European destination. It covers nine times the area of Paris, but only has 1/5th of the population, so it doesn’t feel busy. There are also plenty of S-Bahn, U-Bahn and trams to make reaching the outer-lying areas a breeze.
At the end of the World War II, Berlin lay in ruins. Half of all the buildings had been destroyed. Re-building the capital resulted in a mix of old alongside new, bold designs. Then came the Cold War and the Wall. The East Side Gallery is the longest remaining section of the Wall, and, spanning 1.3km, it is also the longest open air gallery in the world. The often stark and minimal structures of Berlin are the ideal foil for an eye seeking Black & White imagery.
Places on this tour are limited to 6.

Berlin Photography Tour - A Photographic Journey in Black & White
Across the city many world famous locations present themselves along with the lesser known. Shell-Haus’ rippling façade is an excellent example of modernist design from the 1930’s and further along we come to the abandoned Bauhaus museum. Close by we find the Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Heading east towards Mitte, we cross into former East Berlin to find a few original gems hiding amongst the stark, quickly built Russian blocks. South again takes us to the Jewish Museum, looking like a lightning strike from the air. In the distance you might be able to see the ruined remains of the US listening post on Devil’s mountain. The man made hill was built after the end of the second world war from the rubble of destroyed buildings.
If you are looking for an opportunity to challenge yourself, shooting Black & White in a city location, Berlin has a lot to offer. This tour will give you a chance to explore, photograph and work on your shooting and editing skills with a self-confessed Black & White junkie. While we are out shooting, Adrian will capture and edit images as examples so that you can understand the possibilities while you are in the place.

With this workshop there is a free on-line review and editing session on the morning of 9th April 10:00 to 13:00. If you can’t make this session, don’t worry, you can still contribute images and the session will be recorded so you can benefit from the editing ideas and examples.
A note about visiting the Reichstag
In the centre of Berlin, the Reichstag is the meeting place for the German parliament and was restored in the 1990’s by Norman Foster. The public can access its fabulous glass dome with its spiral walkway and views over the city. However, there are many restrictions for tourist groups, short notice cancellations and we have also seen individuals rejected. For that reason, we have not included it as part of our tour. If you plan to spend more time in Berlin, you can apply online for entry here:
