Our Southern Outer Hebrides photography tour 'Barra and Beyond' will take place in April/May 2024 with Bill Ward. The Outer Hebrides form the remote far north western rim of the British Isles. 130 miles in length, and 40 miles from the Scottish mainland, they remain to this day one of the most consistently wild and rugged outposts of the UK.

The northernmost island of Harris and its sister island Lewis seem to have hoovered up a fair bit of photographic attention over the last few years, but they still account for approximately only half of the length of the Hebridean landmass.

Beneath them, from the glorious beaches of Berneray, through the wild moonscapes of the Uists, down to the southern tip of Barra and Vatersay, lies an archipelago of magnificent sand and sea, stretching over 60 miles. Between them, these southern Hebridean islands have some of the finest white sand beaches in all of the British Isles. Coupled with the distinctive Hebridean culture, friendly welcome, and compact travelling distances, it’s a wonderful and hugely rewarding place to travel with a camera.

Southern Outer Hebrides Photography Tour - Barra and Beyond
We’ll start our tour on the southernmost islands of Barra, with its legendary beach airport and runway, and Vatersay, which since 1991 have been joined together by a short causeway. One of the joys of both these islands is that they have high quality beaches facing in all directions north, south, east and west, so you’re never more than a stones throw away from the ocean.

We’ll then take the short ferry hop over to the rocky outcrop of Eriskay, setting for the famous “Whiskey Galore” novel and film, before heading up to our second base in Lochmaddy on North Uist. North Uist and Berneray are wild, windswept, evocative places, with huge expanses of sand and space: West Beach on Berneray is 3 miles of sand, machair, and shells, so impressive that the Thai tourist board famously used a photograph of it to advertise its own beaches in 2009. We’ll spend a couple of days investigating the extraordinary western seaboards of these islands from our base in Lochmaddy, before heading back down to Barra for our final day.

This is terrific seascape photography territory. Your tutor for this tour, Bill Ward, has travelled the length and breadth of these islands on many occasions over the last 10 years and remains in awe of their capacity to surprise and delight. In addition to Seascapes, Bill also specialises in Creative Photography (Intentional Camera Movement/Multiple Exposures), so there will also be plenty of opportunities to experiment with this genre for those who are interested.
