Our North Yorkshire Coast & Woodland tour in November 2024 offers exceptional photographic opportunities in both coastal and woodland locations. The tour has been timed to take advantage of the beautiful late Autumn colour and dynamic coastal light. The North York Moors National Park offers an array of stunning scenery and at this time of year the conditions lend themselves perfectly to landscape photography.

This tour is led by Joe Cornish and Sam Gregory, both of whom are delighted to share their experience and passion for this area with you. Joe lives nearby and this is a rare opportunity to join a workshop with both leaders in this photogenic area.

Robin Hoods Bay makes a great base for any photographic workshop, almost any time of year, and especially in Autumn. It is particularly convenient for sunrises since one of the best views of the Bay is from right outside our hotel! The old town is extremely picturesque and offers some interesting challenges for architectural photography. The beach is complex but can be an interesting location in certain kinds of lighting and with the experience of our leaders you will be guided to the best opportunities.

A few miles further north is Whitby, steeped in history, including the history of photography as it was the home town of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. James Cook’s voyages of discovery started here, and it was once a major whaling port. Long before then, the mighty medieval abbey that stands on the clifftop dominated the town for centuries, although today it is a picturesque ruin (English Heritage). In stormy conditions the breakwaters and piers are spectacular, although safest when seen from a distance with a long lens.

Staithes is the artist’s colony of the area, and is fantastically atmospheric, as well a great place for more architectural studies. The village in its landscape, framed by its headlands and the sea, is an iconic image of the English coast. Joe and Sam will be on hand to help you make compelling images and encourage your photographic development.

There are other gems in the area which we may visit, such as Sandsend and Runswick Bay.

There is also the amazing woodland surrounding May Beck and Falling Foss. This steep-sided valley is decorated with magnificent trees, mainly beech, and winding paths open up a range of perspectives. This is absolutely the peak time of the autumn for colour, and it’s especially good here if there is mist and/or rain. The waterfall, Falling Foss, can make a spectacular sight in full spate, but it is probably the trees that will demand our attention.

There are many other wonderful places to visit in the area including the impressive landscape feature known as the Hole of Horcum. In addition to the well-known spots there are numerous undiscovered gems that Joe has discovered in his many years photographing in the area. We won’t be listing them here as we would prefer they remain undiscovered…but we may have time to visit some of them during the course of this workshop.

We will do our best to match the landscapes and sites to the weather and your leaders Joe & Sam will be on hand throughout to guide and inspire in equal measure. There will also be opportunities for image reviews and post-processing discussions during the time we are not out in the landscape.

Please note: due to the nature of the coastal locations we do require participants to have good mobility and endurance for the conditions. The ground is often uneven, and rocks can be slippery. If you have any queries about access or the physical demands, please do contact us before booking.
