Our Dolomites photography tour 'The Pale Alps' will take place in June 2024 with Astrid McGechan. The Dolomites are amongst Europe’s greatest sights with jagged peaks aplenty and beautiful valleys throughout the area. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a photographer’s dream, with changeable weather offering dramatic light, great shapes and textures to play with and explore.

Our tour will take advantage of a stay in both the eastern and western regions so we can explore the most spectacular areas of this dramatic landscape. This early summer period features flowers bursting into life in the meadows and the area is relatively quiet before the summer rush. There is usually snow still on the high peaks offering a great variety of image making opportunities.

The Dolomites Photography Tour - The Pale Alps
The Dolomites are widely regarded as being among the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the world.  The region covers 500 square miles and comprises 18 peaks which rise to above 3,000 metres. Geologically, the ‘Pale Alps’ are formed of light-coloured dolomitic limestone.  Erosion has carved them into dramatic pinnacles, spires and towers, with contrasting horizontal ledges, crags and plateaux. Some of the rock cliffs here rise more than 1,500 m and are among the highest limestone walls found anywhere in the world.  In some places the peaks stand isolated but in others they form sweeping panoramas which rise abruptly above extensive talus deposits and more gentle foothills.

The Dolomites Photography Tour

We shall have some fabulous opportunities to photograph these natural wonders and have planned a diverse range of locations, from the iconic to hidden treasures. A great diversity of colours is provided by the contrasts between the bare pale-coloured rock surfaces and the forests and lush alpine meadows below which, during the summer months are carpeted with wildflowers. During the tour we shall be exploring high mountain passes which offer sweeping vistas into the valleys and also up-close views of these impressive peaks. In this early Summer period, the weather can still be a little changeable which is ideal for capturing some of the spirit of this area. The mountain roads wind around the peaks and buttresses and offer various photographic opportunities from different aspects. Depending on the weather, one can expect everything from shards of light to dense moody mist and everything in-between.

We shall initially be based in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the chic capital of the eastern Dolomites. This will enable easy access to some of the most spectacular locations in the region. After a few days exploring the area, we shall make the journey over the impressive Passo Gardena to Ortisei. This will give us the opportunity to ascend via cable car to the incredible Seceda ridgeline. It will also facilitate possible further excursions into the neighbouring Val di Funes, where some of the most beautiful pastoral viewpoints can be photographed in the evening light.

While most locations are easily accessible, a few are best reached by cable car. There may be some short steep ascents on foot and occasional longer walks over rocky terrain to access the best positions for image making; a good general level of fitness and a head for heights would be advantageous! This will be a truly memorable tour to one of the greatest alpine regions, in the company of your experienced and enthusiastic tour leader. Astrid will guide you to superb locations, help you create fabulous images of this remarkable region and ensure a great deal of fun is had along the way.
