Our Reflections of Bruges photography tour will take place in December 2024 with Astrid McGechan.
Thanks to its canals and more than 80 bridges, Bruges is often referred to as the Venice of the North. Most of its period architecture remains intact making Bruges one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. Cobblestone streets, windmills and spires all add to its charm. This tour will take place in early December when the light is low, and shadows are long.

A Unesco World Heritage Site, Bruges is a photographer’s heaven, offering us countless views along its canals spanned by bridges, each of which has its own character. The reflections in the water feature all colours under the sun and resemble those found in Venice. We will have ample opportunity to photograph intricate architectural details and pastel-coloured houses with distinctive crow-stepped gables.
A late 15th century legend has it that the city of Bruges was required to keep swans on all lakes and canals at its own expense ‘until the end of time’ by unpopular emperor Maximilian of Austria, as a revenge for his imprisonment and the execution of his trusted advisor Pieter Lanckhals (Langhals means long neck) by the city’s inhabitants. We can find dozens of them on the ‘Lake of Love’, which adjoins the Beguijnhof, a Beguine Benedictine Convent. The park-like courtyard is an island of tranquillity and we will enjoy photographing the elegant poplar trees and white-fronted houses within.
Recently, the innovative chocolatiers of Bruges have come up with a distinctive (secret) recipe for a chocolate version of the ‘Brugsch Swaentje’, thus creating the city’s own official chocolate. During our photographic excursions we will no doubt be tempted to sample the culinary delights of Bruges in particular and Flanders in general, including chocolate and beer, of which the city offers several hundred types.
No photographic trip to Bruges would be complete without wandering along the straight canals just a stone’s throw away from the city. We will spend a few hours exploring the seemingly endless vistas and tree-lined avenues, which will allow us to create atmospheric images in whatever weather we may encounter at that time of the year.
Your guide for this tour will be Astrid McGechan, who will be at hand throughout to help develop your vision and photographic techniques, including shooting at night, long exposures, ICM and multiples exposures. You will be sure to return with a memorable portfolio of images from this most photogenic city.
This tour is limited to 6 participants.
