Our Magic of Kerala India photography tour will take place in September 2024 with Charlie Waite. Kerala's breathtakingly green land, dotted with coconut palms, lagoons, kettu vallams (boats), sunny beaches and waterfalls, offers a soothing and festive mood. Lush plantations rise from the sea, swathe the countryside and sweep the entire state in verdant glory; the only interruptions to this expanse of green are the azure backwaters, along which coconut palms soar to the skies. The culmination lies in the upward fling of the hills, where tea and coffee plantations nurture the greens to a dense monsoon-washed vegetation.

Disarming hospitality of the locals and intriguing ethnic lifestyles unchanged for centuries; herds of elephants leading giant processions; exotic handicrafts and seafood preparations fresh from the Arabian Sea; cosmopolitan cities where the past is always within reach, and small towns where time has stood still; all this and more makes this journey through Kerala an ideal photographic holiday that provides ample opportunities to experience an ancient, but progressive civilisation and return home with magical photographs to treasure forever.

The Magic of Kerala Photography Tour

The Magic of Kerala Photography Tour - Kerala Landscape Photography
Our tour begins with arrival in Kochi (new name for Cochin) where our Magic of Kerala tour will start.

We will photograph some of the unique Chinese fishing nets from our dedicated motorboat, allowing photography opportunities that would not be possible from the shore. Our stay in Kochi will take us into the older parts of the Fort Kochi area looking much the same as it did 1000 years ago. The spice markets will not be overlooked, nor will interaction with the highest of the Hindu casts, the famous Brahmin.

Then onward to the marvellous Spice Village Resort in Periyar. Spice Village is a tribal village set in a spice garden in the cool highlands of Periyar in Thekkady. We will photograph some of Kerala’s most famous elephants and marvel at the manner in which they are lovingly bathed. We may even be invited to assist! The early evening offers an informative walk through the multitude of great spices of Kerala, followed by an unforgettable tribal art performance where photography is encouraged and where Charlie will propose some creative approaches that may hold some surprises.

We will visit the island of Gavi deep inside the Ranni reserve forest. There will be some gentle walking to enjoy and photograph the natural beauty of this glorious area followed by a serene boat ride on the crystal-clear water of Klochupamba Lake.

Just before sunset we will find ourselves witnessing the wonderful panoramic landscape of the Sabarimala hills, before returning to our accommodation at Spice Village Resort. From here we will venture to the great Western Ghats where we will reside at the wonderful Cardamon House. It overlooks the stunning 400-acre lake, which promises images of waterfowl skimming along the water surface in the early morning.

We'll travel onward to Munnar, a splendid hill station on the Western Ghats described by many as a nature lover’s paradise. It is beautifully situated at the confluence of three rivers and our residence at the exquisite Spice Tree Resort will provide our gateway to some of the greatest tea plantations in the world.

During our time here, we will visit the magnificent Anywayirangal dam, which is surrounded by numerous tea plantations and evergreen forests. We will have the option to take a boat trip here for some superb vantage points for our photography. Toward the end of the day, we will travel the short distance to photograph the remnants of the Stone Age dolmens and from here we will be able to photograph Munnar’s fabulous tea plantations, complete with the classic tea pickers who we can work with to suit our creative requirements.

Later on in the tour, we'll head to Alleppey. From here, we enter what some call the ‘Venice of India’ and board our luxury houseboat where we will enjoy single occupancy accommodation as we drift along some of the most beautiful canal waterways in the world. Everyone will have a private bedroom on a 2 bedroom houseboat. Photographing from our boat for an entire day will bring a wonderful variety of opportunities, followed by sleeping on the water, which is such a special experience.

We'll spend time in the truly exotic, top heritage resort of Coconut Lagoon. From here we will enjoy more boating excursions along narrow streams and broader waterways, as well as a remarkable day within the Kumbalanghi where we will photograph some of the oldest traditions within this age-old cultural heritage.

Our 2024 tour to Kerala promises to be a most photographically exciting journey through what still remains a relatively unknown part of India. Charlie will be at hand throughout to ensure you return with photographs to treasure.
