Norman McCloskey

Norman McCloskey is a landscape photographer based in Kenmare, County Kerry in the southwest of Ireland. Originally from Limerick City, McCloskey moved to Kerry in 1992, having been attracted by the county’s contrasting and dramatic landscape. He studied photography in IADT in 1994, subsequently joined the Inpho Photography agency in Dublin and continues to work fulltime there from his permanent base in Kerry. McCloskey has been photographing the Irish landscape for over 22 years, with much of his work focusing on Kerry, West Cork and the coastal areas of the West of Ireland. Further afield, he has photographed the dramatic landscapes of Iceland, New Zealand and the Antarctic – the latter work completed during a 3- week expedition in 2008. His work has been on show in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and he has had work published in both the national and international press. It is McCloskey’s passion for the Irish landscape, and in particular the stunning beauty of Killarney National Park, that led to the recently published book project. Shot over a three-year period, PARKLIGHT – Images of Killarney National Park is the first high quality, coffee table book of landscape photography on Ireland’s finest National Park, which is arguably the country’s most beautiful and diverse landscape. The book comprises a collection of landscape images of the park, covering all parts of the 25,000 acres that its borders encompass. In photographing such diverse locations as the indigenous oak forest, rugged mountain tops, highland bogs and ancient yew forests, McCloskey’s principal aim has been to avoid the clichéd views that are often associated with this iconic and popular destination. According to McCloskey, “Although Killarney National Park has long been familiar to me, it has been a humbling and exhilarating experience to work on this project. During the time I have spent exploring the park and discovering its secrets, I have been constantly amazed at the endless beauty of a landscape transformed by light with the passing seasons.”
