Our Paris and Montmartre photography tour will take place in May 2026 and will be led by Peter Fenech.
Paris is a bustling, modern city, but look closely, and it demonstrates an eclectic blend of styles. The purpose of this tour is to explore the many faces of the French capital through the ages, from the rustic cobbled streets of the Artist’s Quarter, Montmartre, to the elegant Boulevards of the mid-1800s, the industrial ironwork of the early 20th century, and, finally, the recent glass towers. This patchwork of themes provides the photographer with a great opportunity to practice adapting their technique and camera settings to tell a story.
Many photographers may think they know Paris. After all, its landmarks feature heavily in the photographic media and in cinema. However, there is far more to this metropolis than the Eiffel Tower, although as we’ll learn on the tour, it is our job to find unconventional images of recognisable subjects. By looking deeper at what makes Paris unique, we’ll discover a city like no other in Europe, focusing on the little details in the architecture and on what it means to be a Parisian.

Paris and Montmartre Photography Tour - The Artists' Inspiration
Paris demonstrates a fascinating mix of industrial metal and elegant stone structures. We will visit the Pont de Bir-Hakeim, a bridge which is a great subject itself and also nicely frames a creative view of the Eiffel Tower. We’ll learn how to embrace black and white photography to make the most of the rough metal textures. After a visit to the Place de l'Étoile to capture an elevated view from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, we’ll then move to the Île de la Cité to capture evening light on the Glass Pyramid of the Louvre and sunset long exposures of Notre Dame. We’ll also visit the recently restored Cathedral to see the exquisite interior.

We’ll follow in the footsteps of artists like Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec. An early start on our second day will ensure the streets of Montmartre are empty, allowing us to have the cobbled lanes and iconic steps to ourselves. After a morning of cityscape shooting, we’ll learn to capture reportage shots at the markets in the Place du Tertre. We’ll dine at the Café des Deux Moulins, made famous as a main location in the film Amélie, and afterwards head back out to capture the neon lights of Montmartre’s many well-known bars and the glowing period lamps lining the nighttime streets. There really isn’t a better place to capture ‘film-noir’ style cinematic photographs.
We’ll spend a leisurely morning photographing on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, capturing the view of Northern Paris from the hill, and focusing on using light to reveal the Parisian lifestyle. We’ll look at how buildings, textures, and people can be used to create abstract studies that capture the atmosphere of life in Montmartre. This will give us plenty of time to wrap up the tour, ask any final questions, and catch the Eurostar train back to London on the last evening.
